Forged in Fire Spoilers

Of course, the only reason Styles helped out Kirk in "The Return of the Worthy" was because PAD was no longer allowed to use R.J. Blaise, who just disappeared between one issue and the next.

A shame since I really liked R.J. Blaise, but I think PAD was smart in playing Styles "against type" as he was the stereotypical, cookie-cutter arrogant military type in TSFS.

Just because Styles helps Kirk out of a jam, doesn't mean he isn't an ass. The way it was phrased the first time, IMO, was circular logic.

IE: Styles helped Kirk out of a jam = Styles isn't an ass.

One doesn't necessarily equal the other. He could still be an ass. But I didn't think he was an ass anyway, just playing devil's advocate. I think he was just a by-the-book commander with no imagination.

Yes, but I stated "He even..." Hence, in addition to him not being an "ass," he also helps Kirk out. One does not depend on the other and, in fact, is not dependent on one another. Your reading of my sentences is wrong and it is you who imposed that one must equal the other.
Mea culpa

It's been a long day for me.

No problem.

Back on topic, I think that M&M presented Styles well in their book. While I still dislike him and his "command style," I understand him. It helps that the authors put us in his POV.

I really think that's one of the highest compliments you could pay an author - makes me want to read this book all the more.

It's a tricky thing to do in prose, but that's one of the advantages of a third person narrative is the ability to jump into different close third POVs and give the reader a new perspective, pun intended, on a detested character. It also let's the reader experience a beloved character from someone else's point-of-view.

I finally got my hands on this today, along with the issue of STM with Wardimore's Captains article and the A Burning House preview, and the original fantasy novel American Gods.

Unless the authors have their hands on a new timeline, there is a typo with chapters 7, 9 and 11, taking place after the ani episode More Troubles More Tribbles, which is in 2270 according to the timeline in Voyages of the Imagination, not 2269.
