For All Mankind Trailer - Apple TV- SPOILER

How are they going to pull off the "Great Asteroid Heist" given that we know know that there's "spooks" on Mars?

There are a lot of conflicting motivations going on that give Dev a lot of space to maneuver.

Right now, iridium is one of the USSR's primary exports, and Goldilocks has the potential to cause a market crash (one assumes that they took into account what the new supply would do to the cost of the mineral when they calculated the asteroid's value) and to remove a lot of trade-leverage the Soviet Union and its newly-installed strongman government is depending on for foreign and domestic reasons. They're acting publicly like they're happy enough still having a piece of the pie with a multi-national, multi-corporation mining effort in Earth orbit, but they may prefer it if Goldilocks just floated on past. Bringing the asteroid to Mars might also be acceptable, as it delays the payoff and gives the USSR more time as the prime supplier of iridium. It's possible the KGB agent (I'm going to pick the dark horse candidate and go with the pretty-boy who's been cozying up to Sam) will end up having orders to sabotage the asteroid capture mission (if the agent hasn't been already by participating in the strike), and letting Dev's conspiracy steal it will be a compromise position to accomplish his mission, or the only option left if the attempt to divert the asteroid to Earth is sabotaged. And, to my prior point that Margo may get the opportunity to share Soviet secrets in the interest of scientific advancement and/or saving lives since she's an equal-opportunity open-book, Margo and Aleida have both demonstrated the ability to sniff out a cover-up. If the Soviet Union is sandbagging the mission, possibly risking lives to do it, one or both of them is going to figure it out.

Helios also wouldn't mind leaving the asteroid at Mars (though there might be some division growing between Helios-Houston and Helios-Happy Valley), since it'll get them a lot more business. But a delayed payout isn't great for them, it's more chances for things to go wrong before the mining operation is at full capacity, it's more prudent to bring the asteroid to Earth and compete on a level playing field rather than trying to keep the company afloat while spending on a multi-decade development.

NASA seems to be the only ones who'd be fully committed to bringing the asteroid to Earth. Does the CIA share their motivation? I don't know, the CIA does all sorts of wacky stuff, they might also think international stability and/or American hegemony is served by keeping Goldilocks way the hell over there.

Hearing Eli talking about the dangers of declaring martial law on Mars immediately made me think of Babylon 5. I guess Ron Moore is a fan of both space station shows!

haven't seen the episode yet to get the full context but I'd also toss in Moore's last big Sci-fi series. The issue of martial law came on up several times in BSG including Adama's great line about what happens when the army is used to enforce the peace.

Yeah, but I meant specifically "martial law on Mars."

Wag the Dog.

Dev provoked a strike.

Then weaponized the strikers into an Army.

Jesus.

If he wrote the new employment contract, then he has been gaming these roughnecks for months.

What a c###.

Should he be tarred and feathered, of crucified when they figure it out?

Dev will probably be the first president of Mars. Ed will be the first human to lay his bones there by choice.

Well, except for Danny, I guess, but he don't count!

thought martial law was on Earth and Mars wanted independence (been a while since I last re-watched B5).
President Clark declared martial law on Earth and Earth's colonies with a state of emergency on April 9, 2260. Captain Sheridan read a station wide announcement that at that moment Babylon 5 was placed under martial law. If B5 was under martial law, it isn't difficult to imagine that Mars, Orion 7 and Proxima 3 are all ordered to be placed under martial law at the same time.
The Executive Order that B5 received:

The very next episode Xavier Montoya, Head of the Mars Provisional Government announced that he wouldn't implement martial law, and Clark ordered Mars be bombed. After that the colonies including Babylon 5 break away from the EA and delcare independence. That was the start of the Earth Civil War.
Mars wanted independence, but Earth didn't want to grant it to them.
After the Earth Civil War, it was a requirement of the newly formed Interstellar Alliance that Mars be granted independence before Earth was allowed to join.

On a much lighter note, I loved Dima's conversation with Alex during the latter's checkup. It was very sweet of Dima to share stories of Alexei to Alex and I loved seeing Alex light up during that exchange. If only Ed had the same natural instinct how to interact with Alex. And yet, it's no surprise considering Ed's poor history as a father. That said, I'm encouraged by the acknowledgement that Alex's physiology is better suited for Mars and I really hope the show continues to focus on that path.

So i needed a full minute or two to close my mouth and wipe the grin off my face at this twist, that was so ingenius and devious. I love it!:lol:

Dev must be the most machiavellian character of the show and you can't help but love a good villain or antihero or hero - i honestly can't decide. Never for a single second did i consider the possibility to actually hijack Goldilocks but from Dev's vantage point it is a brilliant move and nobody expects it. He has moved his chess pieces in position, bought himself a workforce/potential army and the biggest bargaining chip in human history. That guy is thinking well beyond his years on the mortal plane, he want's to become immortal by probably founding the first country outside of Earth and be forever part of the history books.

And the best part is that no one will see it coming. However this will not go over easy - Dev most likely doesn't know the CIA/KGB group on Happy Valley, he likely counted in the factor that there must be some physical resistance by M7 people but since he has a larger force he will win out in the end because he won't expect a firefight if it comes to that.

Now i thought after last week's episode that this will be the one to hit the fan what with the fallout from Margo's reveal but that is extremely tame compared to what Dev set into motion.

Oh my god - what a christmas present this show has delivered :D

I gotta say, I do not like what they've done to Ed Baldwin this season.

The rest is great, as usual.

I don't like it either, but Ed's behavior and decisions are consistent with his past personality. What is an advantage at one stage of life can be a real PITA in another, if you stiffly refuse to change with the times. I can relate a bit.

and once again those back on Earth gets things arse about vis a vis the refinery plant explosion.

or did they not get told by Happy Valley that the explosion the result of by-passing safety protocols.

But then I guess it's easier to clamp down on the strikers by going the terrorist path.

Yeah, we talked about that part too.

Removing the equipment was one thing, but the NASA folks knew the part was missing. The guy bypassed the regulator even after being told not to do that.

So I don’t hold the Helios employee responsible for it. If the refinery had blown up immediately upon restart, that would be a different thing.

Given the short time frame and the time pressure to get to Goldilocks i'm not even sure they started the investigation and as humans always do they jump to conclusions.

One thing I don't get about the refinery thing. Shouldn't the building have lost atmosphere and people in there should be worse off than that Russian with the suit tear earlier this year?

could depend on where the explosion the breach the refinery was. Could have been blow back in the operations area but the big explosion was from the tanks which would have been separate (well you'd hope so for safety reasons).

or perhaps they were able to get into an area that was still intact and and seal it (might have been a few seconds between the first explosion and the breaching one).

Otherwise they would have been dead by the time rescuers got there given that the striking workers had put the space suits outside and barricaded the airlocks.

Though I guess there might be one or two kept by the workers that could have been used but still take time to retrieve them and get rescuers suited up.

Of course, Irina was Sergei's KGB handler and helped destroy both his and Margo's lives. Makes perfect sense and I should've seen that coming. Problem is what can Margo possibly do to stay in the United States? Everyone hates her. Even if Aleida may have cooled off a little now that she finally knows the whole truth, what can she possibly do or say in Margo's defense? As I postulated last week, the only source of redemption for Margo in anyone's eyes is a valiant act of self-sacrifice for the sake of the Goldilocks mission and even that probably wouldn't be enough for most people. And what could such a sacrifice take in the form of when all of the action is millions of miles away? Unless there's some kind of vital intel that Roscosmos withholds during the mission and Margo then provides that information, I don't see a path for her.

If Kelly ever finds out Ed used Alex for his conspiracy to steal Goldilocks and put Alex into harm's way (I seriously worried for him for a moment), she'll never ever forgive him. And she would have every right not to. Every time I think some sense finally crept into Ed's head about, well, anything, let alone parenting, as he did when he read The Sand Pebbles to help Alex fall asleep (great bedtime reading choice!), he manages to walk back that sense completely.

But at least in this moment, Kelly is doing something truly wonderful, seeking out the possibility of new life (even if not new civilizations). I felt her elation in that moment at Korolev Crater and that's when I love the show the most. I cannot wait for them to get to Europa possibly next season (if we get a fifth season).

The last episodes are going to be blockbusters. The attempted and possibly successful theft of Goldilocks and the repercussions for those actions, along with any and all retaliations, is going to be riveting to watch.

I have to say, I can't think of a single bad episode this season. They are knocking it out of the park!

1. We've got us a heist movie this season!

2. I liked the scene cutting from Ed reading to his grandson to Kelly doing her job at the crater. It was a pretty good visual zoom-in, but I was hoping we'd see a little more of the majesty of the landscape. We've been on Mars for a season and a half now and we still haven't seen humans wondering at the immensity of Olympus Mons, or seen the Valles Marineris from the rim of the canyon. Show us the majesty! Show us why we even want to be on Mars!

3. Great bonding moment between Ed and his grandson, even if it was TOTALLY inappropriate. I was chuckling, thinking of what Kelly is going to do to Ed if she finds out. This will be a formative moment in the kid's life if he comes back as a young adult next season- who knows what he'll be up to.

4. Interesting twist on the Margo situation- I was wondering how they were going to work Sergei back into it. We all knew her boss is a poison pill, though.

5. The gal in charge of swapping out the module on the spacecraft has quite a job ahead of her. Interesting to see how she pulls it off.

Only two more eps!!
