Fire Fly?

I love StarTrek DS9 was the best IMO, Loved Battle Star, Star Gate is ok but I hated Babylon 5 with a Passion.

How would someone like this do with Fire Fly?

Uh, I don't think that any of those shows are really comparable with Firefly. The show is basically a gritty western set in space with bits of comedy thrown in.

If you're really looking for comparisons I would ask whether you've seen the Coen brothers' True Grit. Firefly is True Grit... with spaceships! ;)

But why don't you simply watch it? It's only 14 episodes anyway.

Your tastes sound similar to mine (at least, DS9 and nuBSG are my other favorite sci-fi shows) and I absolutely LOVE Firefly. One of my top shows of all time, maybe my favorite; it was on for such a short period of time that there aren't really any bad eps.

If you get the Science channel, there's a Firefly marathon on Sunday; you could check it out then. Also, Hulu shows 3 episodes (rotating which ones), so you could see it there; you'd just have to wait until the first episode comes on.

as a aside, Just curious, did you get past season 1 of Babylon 5?

I think you would think it is at least ok, it is more "fun" then "serious", If your not enjoying it by Shindig, then just watch serenity and be done with it....

(I watched Serenity Prior to watching firefly, and Serenity is just a good movie.)

No I bought Season 1 and thought it was terrible. The worst SCFI sets I've ever seen and 0 character development.

Not at all. The characters in B5 are treated as chess pieces, changing or evolving only as explicitly required to move the plot forward.

Being able to explain a character's motives and behavior is not the same as making it plausible or interesting. B5 was a crossword puzzle.

... and 0 character development.

Well, I suppose this statement could actually be true with regards to B5's first season.

But if you look at the entire show it's probably the science fiction series with most character development ever.
Indeed. Season 1 is very rough, and I can see it turning somebody off to a show, but I really think a person needs to try to at least watch Season 2 before they decide if they like it or not.

lol thats what I hear but everytime I try to get through season one I get 5 episodes in and thats it. Last time I switched to watching ENT.

I think I watched two or three episodes when it first aired and it was just flat and boring. The friend who turned me on to Firefly has it, so I'll borrow it from him at some point...

When it first aired, I gave up halfway through the pilot!

It wasn't until a couple years ago that I tried to watch it again, and I fell in love with it. I've watched it straight through 4 times now.

How about this...just start up with "Voice in the Wilderness" and "Chrysalis" and then start season 2. You will miss some stuff but you can get into the meat of the story quickly...

B5 newbies who are considering to give up on it should probably watch Season 2's The Coming of Shadows and The Long, Twilight Struggle first... despite the heavy spoilers and all.

If they're not interested in continuing to watch then, it's really not their kind of show, I suppose. But if they like these episodes they should try to make it through Season 1.

I've had the exact same problem with B5. It's taken me years to get to episode 5. Even though I typically don't care for Western/SciFi crossovers, I really started to like Firefly with episode 2, and was pretty much smitten by the end. I'd give it a try.

Firefly is fantastic and someone with interests in sci-fi and space should definitely try it.

Babylon 5 on the other hand is pretty meh.

The "Distorted Humor guide to make it though Season 1 of Babylon 5 if you hate it."

Option 1 - (7 episode plan) watch "Midnight on the Firing Line","Deathwalker", "Signs and Portents", "A Voice in the Wilderness (Part 1)", "A Voice in the Wilderness (Part 2)", "Babylon Squared", and "Chrysalis"

Option 2 - (5 episode plan) watch "Midnight on the Firing Line", "Signs and Portents", "A Voice in the Wilderness (Part 1)", "A Voice in the Wilderness (Part 2)", and "Chrysalis".

Option 3 - (4 episode plan) Watch "Signs and Portents", "A Voice in the Wilderness (Part 1)", "A Voice in the Wilderness (Part 2)", and "Chrysalis".

Option 4 - (2 episode plan) Watch "Signs and Portents", and "Chrysalis", (at this point you will be confused at parts in season 2.

Option 5 - (Zero episode plan) - Start with season 2

Option 6: (Sub-zero Episode plan) use Redshirts idea of watching watch Season 2's The Coming of Shadows and The Long, Twilight Struggle...

I'll just run straight through it (B5), though if it's as painful as I remember it may well take months...I don't intend to undertake it until after my Trekathon as a result.

I would be much quicker to throw out Deathwalker than Babylon Squared.

But yeah, B5's first season starts out a bit rough.

Hate the basic science got wrong (multiple planets arouind one star? How big istheir Goldilocks Zone? Seriously?) Don't much like the Reapers reveals in the movie.

It's Reavers, and even after the movie the exact scope of the system is unclear. A lot of the promotional material shows a small star cluster model.

Ditto, Deathwalker was No 7 on the list of episodes (Babylon Squared was no Six, as its in the seven episode but not the five episode), I almost put Mind War instead of Deathwalker, as that (Mind war) intro's to Bester, but that episode is so bad....while I find deathwalker to be a good episode as it shows the politics, mirky morals, and Vorlons to good form...
