Final Five Count down poll

BOT, DD, COTEOF. Done deal.

Oh, and Balance is so far ahead of the others it's not even close. Kirk & Spock at their best vs. the worthy Romulan commander!

I agreed with the Boss :D

The Doomsday Machine
Amok Time
Balance of Terror

GM

I went with Balance of Terror and City on the Edge of Forever.

I like the others, but I wouldn't put them as the very *best* of TOS. Probably because I think Spectre of the Gun is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and, yes, I know I'm the only one.

My votes in this round go to-

Mirror, Mirror
The City on the Edge of Forever
The Doomsday Machine

Balance of Terror just missed out on my Top 3, and out of those episodes, Amok Time is the only one which is not in my personal Top 5.(Errand of Mercy at 5)
BRG

City, then D Machine, then reluctantly BoT. BoT's huge popularity as best episode ever is very surprising to me. It's a good retelling of a submarine story. For me, it's a small dip in the very high quality of season one.

"I'm gonna marry you, mister!" A few points off for that.

I try to recapture what I got from Mirror Mirror and Amok Time when I was a kid, but perhaps decades of "opposite universe" stories have induced fatigue. Both episodes seem gimmicky now. I was surprised recently at the simplistic and melodramatic writing and acting in Amok Time. Theodore Sturgeon wrote it? He wrote perhaps my 2nd favorite SF novel ever. Back then, it was jarring seeing Spock have his dignity and reason stripped away. Now, it just looks like an excuse for a fight, because a little "action" might get those ratings up.

I love Spectre. I just wouldn't put it in the top 3. "Take my bag!"

Doomsday Machine is my all-time favorite episode, but I know BoT will win this. But not by much. :)

Only if you subscribe to the notion that all the shows in the poll are "quality" shows. My take on this one is Mirror, Mirror is just over the top hammy camp, COTEOF is maudlin and Amok Time exists just so that people will say "Wow...Vulcans only f*** every seven years??"

Whereas "Balance Of Terror" is just an inferior rip-off of "The Enemy Below" and "The Doomsday Machine" is about blowing things up and features one of the most over-the-top hammy guest appearences in Trek history.

Gee, that eliminates all five episodes.
