Fennius' Ships and Images

So, years ago I used to do cgi stuff, a fair bit trek based, but fell out of it. I've recently started up again, and am trying to be a little bit better.

Here's the first ship I worked on, the USS Endeavour:

Not quite finished yet, there's a few details I want to add and a couple of bits to spruce up, including getting the self illumination to work better (also I think I made the hull windows too big and it needs more on the saucer). And someday I'll figure out how to get proper textures on and give it registry markings.

Backstory: The Excelsior was originally a testbed for new technologies, and after construction it seems to have spent an awful lot of time sitting around in drydock before actuallly being properly commisioned. So the way I see it, before the Excelsior proved itself as the future workhorse of starfleet, the Admiralty wanted to hedge their bets: the Endeavour was commissioned as a more direct replacement for the venerable Constitution class, less radical than the Excelsior but incorporating several of the new designs it pioneered, while also showing off some refinements and advances that would eventually work their way back to the Exclesior with the Enterprise B model (in the engines mostly). Obviously the Excelsior did eventually work out its teething problems, and went on to become the primary large starship for Starfleet, so the Endeavour was never produced in huge numbers. But I see a few of them continuing to serve here and there for quite some time, as the Excelsior's 'Little Sister'.

The second ship I started work on is the USS Lochland. I'm still working on this one so here's the wip pics.

This one was originally going to be a TOS era one, but I accidentally hull detailed (Literally, the selection group went completely wrong) and liked the result, so I flattened the saucer a bit and decided to incorporate a load of Kelvin details. I'm thinking it sits somewhere in that Kelvin - TOS gap rather than being specifically Kelvin era.

The secondary hull in partyicular I took details from the Kelvin, though the deflector is one I based on Tobias Richter's version - I think the onscreen blue one looks kinda awful, but I love the white one so thats what I went for.

The three thingymajigs around the dish are drawn from the similar thingies you see on the Connie/Refit.

The Shuttlebay:

Nacelles:

I experimented with different types of grill first.

For now at least I've settled on the TOS-esque top one.

The bussard is one I spent a lot of time fiddling with settings (and then not writing them down.).

This was the first version of the internals:

Its a mix of TOS, my own stuff, and a melange of fan designs from the many reference pictures I looked at.

I quite liked the more translucent look with details inside it.

^ This is the lighting settings I really like and didn't save. Whoops.

And with a bit more detail:

Since I'm currently in a different city from the computer that has those files on them, I started working on a shuttle to go with the Lochland, again drawing from one of the Kelvin ones and trying to incorporate TOS bits as well.

Finally, I also have this concept for a Romulan BoP/Warbird:

BoPconcept_zpsbtf5jrut.jpg

Oh I like that BoP! Especially the lower one, it looks like a great TOS ship!

That was the idea :) I initially wasn't so sure about the beak (seemed a bit on the nose*), but the more I look at it the more I like it.

It seems like a naturally stepping point away from the TOS one towards the D'deridex look.

*I'll get my coat.

The gridlines also have a tendency to disappear in the renders, though adding more lights around it and a better texture might bring them out more.

Added nav lights to the saucer, along with Enterprise/The Cage clamp patch thingies. Those black bits on the saucer - the idea apparently was they thy were pads for where the docking clamps would latch on if it was in drydock. They were removed for the production TOS but Enterprise brought them back for the NX class, so I figured I'd include them.

Still can't figure out what settings I used to get those really nice sort of frosted orange bussards. Even using theoretically the same settings doesn't quite replicate it.

Finally got around to poking that Romulan concept.

Also experimenting with using the 'brick' texture to make hullplating, I quite like the result even if it is very regular.
Mesh ahs gone a bit weird around the underside of the beak though.

Stuck a stock spacesuited figure* under the torpedo launcher of the Endeavour while mucking about with textures, plus a little photoshop post processing. I quite liek the result. Hadn't realised just how large those launchers are - the figure is scaled loosely off the docking airlocks, though it does mean those windows you can see above are too close together to be seperate decks.

I poked the Endeavour model a little, in particular trying to sort out lights for self illumination, but it didn't seem to be working very well unfortunately.

Okay so its been.....a while, including a hard drive crash, new pc, different jobs, and multiple aborted projects, but THIS time I might actually finish one (Yes I say that every time) :D

So far unnamed, the idea for this ship is something blending the TOS(/SNW) and TMPO styles, initially taking the Shepard class as an inspiration but moving quite a bti away from there. The thought behind it is a slightly smaller, more compact vessel than a Constitution, but still a comparable weight class - playing around with the secondary hull and literally cutting it in half gave me something that was nicely 'cut down connie' while keeping shades of the future Excelsior style in the shape. The shuttlebay did not look right on the end sticking up like the Excelsior though so its moving forward to the base of the neck (yet to be detailed)

Also I absolutely stole was lovingly inspired by design details and elements from @Hunter-G 's Connie rebuild, but hopefully mine is sufficiently low quality you can't tell :D

The nacelles are done I think. The saucer is shaped out but needs details with RCS, windows, possibly some sensors, and the back of the cutouts needs detailing. Bridge is done, though I'm not a thousand percent sold on the TMP bridge with the older style nacelles - it really didn't work with the blue paint but making the markings grey and once I stuck some details on the underside of the pylons I think its coming into its own. Phasers I'm happy with for now.

Upper pylons are done, though needs some touch up and reshaping where it connects to the engine block, and there will likely be some surface details and maybe an impulse crystal showing up as well. Edges are TMP based, underside has what was inspired by TOS' grills but gone in a different direction and a bunch of vents added to give it its own look. The details of the engine itself I'm happy with, even if the effect isn't looking as nice as I'd want.

Sensor dome is done, though I worry the surrounding block bits are a bit oversized, it does prevent it all just being plain saucer though. Deflector dish itself I'm happy with, I likle them in gold and white lights, inspired by what Tobias Richter did to change up the Kelvin model, but the bit behind the deflector is quite blank for now.

Basically everything on the secondary hull still needs detailing and the neck is still in primitive form.

What I haven't yet figured is hwo I'll do the torpedoes, there isn't really room for a TMP style large launcher section, but I might use some of the smaller detailing from it.

This is one stunning starship!
The only advice to give is to blend that upper section (impulse deck) of the ship to the secondary hull without using that "step"...just blend it down like the way the pylons blend to the saucer and impulse deck.
Most excellent concept!

Thank you!

It does look a little off the way it is, the intent is to be p[ulling form the TOS look - I do intend to add a bit more above, and possibly an impulse crystal, and that will hopefully pull it together - if that doesn't work though then yeah I could try a smoother integration

Edit: I might remove the blocky bit before it though and move the engine itself forward, you're right that area suddenly goes too blocky and stepped
