I'm neutral on the recent allegations that Russia has a pile of dirt on Trump. They might, they might not, but I honestly don't think it matters. Trump is the opposite of Teflon, there's so much publicly known crap on him that an additional turd won't make much of a difference. He's a scumbag, we all know it. His voters either thought it was unimportant or even think his type of sleaze is a curative for DC sleaze.
I *will* say that Russia has RNC dirt as well. That *might* matter. Earlier reports stated that hackers penetrated both parties, but only released data from the Democrats. Suggestions that the RNC security was simply superior are implausible. Both parties buy off the shelf servers and software (95% likely Microsoft). These platforms have known vulnerabilities.
I fully expect, now that we have unified GOP government, that Russia *will* weaponize the stolen RNC data the next time the two countries have a standoff. It's logical. Throw off your enemy with their dirty laundry the moment they need to be focused the most. Not a moment before.
And the media, in their eternal quest for eyeballs will fall for it again, disservicing the country for their individual gains.

Yeah, Republicans only get by because Democrats are, by and large, too decent to dig up dirt on them.
You haven't spent much time in Illinois then. "Decent" is not how one gets or stays in office there. It's cutthroat, with Democrat-on-Democrat mudslinging and an election rulebook that's more of a weapon to bludgeon than a guarantor of fairness. It's rough and dirty, and is a not-small reason why half of the living Illinois governors are felons.
Obama was an exception, and he left for bigger things before he was tainted, but don't take him as typical. Never forget the main reason he sailed into the Senate so easily was the Jack/Jeri Ryan sex scandal (something all Trek fans should know).

It would be impossible to blackmail donald trump. First of all, he has no shame. Second, there is nothing that anybody could say about him that would change anybody's opinion of him. Third, he would just deny everything and his supporters would believe him. "That's not me in that tape. This is fake. I could get better looking women than that. Even in Russia, I could get better looking women than that. So sad."
They're unified enough to catch ALL the blame for what happens for the next 4 years. By that, I mean they claim to be in the same party.
But as you point out, just because the government has a unified brand doesn't mean it's unified in practice. Too bad for them. All of the accountability and little of the actual power.
Things are very unstable. One or two scandals and it might collapse on itself and we'll have 2 more years of paralyzing infighting.
