Favourtie/Most hated Christmas song

It's quite interesting to see how some people's favorites are other's least favorites.

I think it would be difficult to pick a favorite. A few are - Merry Christmas Darling by The Carpenters; Last Christmas by Wham; Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth by Crosby and Bowie. A couple that are probably under the radar are on the Hall and Oates Christmas CD - Home for Christmas and Christmas Must Be Tonight (Originally done by Robbie Robertson and The Band). I like a fair amount of the Mannheim Steamroller material and can always listen to some of the classics by the likes of Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis, etc.

As for least favorites, I'll go with Feliz Navidad by Jose Feliciano (absolutely THE worst of the worst), Springsteen's gravelly, yelling of Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Christmas Shoes, Santa Baby, McCartney's Wonderful Christmas Time and Lennon's Happy Christmas War is Over. I could go on and on, but I think I've covered the worst offenders.

HATE Little Drummer Boy with a passion.

I like Silent Night and Mary Did You Know but after I've heard them twice I'm good for another year. It's hard to say that I love any Christmas songs.

Favorite - Oh Holy Night by Nat King Cole

Anakin Sith level Hate - Dominick the Italian Christmas Donkey

^I heard that on the radio a few days ago and if any Christmas song could even come close to being as awful as the "Chipmunk Song," this is it.

Fucking HELL, that's annoying.

Another song that sets my teeth on edge is one I had to learn in school for choir and the teacher played the record several times for us. The kid's nasally, fake voice just got on my nerves.

"Enjoy."

Most despised: Last Christmas by Wham. If I believed in hell, that would be on a loop there

Pffft, Last Christmas is AWESOME! Although this might be a case of "Germans love David Hasselhoff"; I don't know.
* shrugs *

My favourite Christmas Song is "Adeste Fideles", as sung by Bing Crosby.

I don't know which one's the worst. That "Santa Baby" song is a contender, though. Blergh.

I both adore and loathe "Silent Night."

It's a lovely, beautiful song but is at times performed so trudgingly slowly that it becomes interminable and thus insufferable.

Every time I hear "Let It Snow" I reply, "...unless you have to DRIVE in this shit, in which case I hope it never snows again for at least a hundred years".

Kinda missing the point of song, aren't you?

Honorable mentions:

South Park's Christmastime in Hell and Merry Fucking Christmas.

Curly: "Did'jya ever hear of Snow, Snow, Beautiful Snow?"
Girl: "Why yes, did you write that?"
Curly: "No, I shoveled it!

Least favorite:
I'm not familiar with "The Christmas Shoes".
Do yourself a favor and keep it that way. It's become a holiday tradition to see how quickly I can recognize the song and change the channel when listening to Christmas stations in the car.

Honorable mention goes to "Last Christmas" by Wham, which was actually in my personal Christmas mix for years because it was a close in-law's favorite. After the divorce, I was all too happy to remove it.

(Of course, during the marriage it annoyed the ex to no end that I had Stan Freberg's "Christmas Dragnet" in the mix....)

It's all definitely a matter of taste, tradition, and nostalgia. Some songs mentioned as hated here are ones that I love. I'm very fond of "The Chipmunk Song" because my sister and I had the record as little kids...and anyone who listed Paul's "Wonderful Christmastime" in this category is dead to me :p .

Favorites...ah, so many. Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" is one of the most successful songs of all time for a good reason. And it just ain't Christmas without The King:

Love the Elvis Christmas albums. My mother was a teenager in the 50s meaning, not atypically, she always had a crush on Elvis. So the King's Christmas albums were a staple in our house.

Another of my favorites, the T-Bone Burnett version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen:

Maybe we should say, the worst christmas song ever is the one you are forced to listen to on a loop for hours.

In which case it's an electronic version of "Jingle Bells" that played on an endless loop through one of those inflatable giant yard snow globes that sat in my (now former) neighbor's front yard.

Every night around 9:00 pm I'd take the dog out for a walk and that damnable tune would be cutting through the chill December air, burrowing into my brain until I couldn't get it out for hours on end.

I can't tell you the number of times I seriously considered getting a BB gun and shooting that thing in the hopes that would end the torment. The only thing that stopped me was the realization that he'd probably still let it play even after the globe sat there, deflated.

I tend to love all Christmas music. I love the Carpenters Christmas Portrait (Christmas Waltz) and An Old-Fashioned Christmas (An Old-Fashioned Christmas (song), There's No Place Like Home For The Holidays, Do You Hear What I Hear, I Heard Te Bells On Christmas Day) albums. Even the Beach Boys Ultimate Christmas album (1998 compilation that contains the Beach Boys entire 1964 Christmas Album, the 1963 version of "Little Saint Nick", a humerous studio pairing of "Little Saint Nick" to the backing track for "Drive-In", their scarce 1974 single "Child of Winter", plus tracks from their shelved 1978 Christmas album 'Merry Christmas From The Beach Boys', including a beautiful rendition of "Bells Of Christmas" [the backing track was heard on their 1978 MIU album as the "Belles of Paris").

But two Christmas songs that I really do not care for all that much are John Lennon and Yoko Ono's track "Merry Christmas (War Is Over)" and the Band-aid song "Do THey Know It's Christmas".

To those that hate "Little Drummer Boy," the following would not be possible without it, so it is far from my least favorite:

All I'm saying is this. If I'm Joseph, and I just spent the night in a lean-to trough, yanking a newborn of questionable parentage out of my wife, and then some little street urchin shows up, and starts beating a drum at him, in the middle of the night, followed by the barnyard animals keeping time with him, presumably the way barnyard animals must, by braying and stomping their hooves in the immediate vicinity, I'm probably not thinking about how blessed the moment is, or excited about the prospect of 3 supposedly wise strangers surrounding my infant with incense smoke or rubbing him down with ointments, regardless of how much gold they have to offer. I'm more likely to grab the nearest pitchfork and start swinging... Pa rum pum pum pum

On that note, my next hated Christmas song is Andy Williams' Happy Hollidays. Hoopdie doo & dickory dock. Speak English twerp
