Favorite military aircraft?

In my office(the only safe place for them)are three models of varying sizes of the ww2 Corsair.Something about that crank-wing design that I love.
In the jet dept.,it has to be the A10 Thunderbolt(so ugly that it's endearing). It just looks so robust and functional.

The Avro Vulcan is a good one too. Its massive profile and its function are quite awe-inspring.

damn sexy aircraft.

It is amazing how an aircraft's nationality can almost be guessed at by it's design.

The Vulcan and Spitfire's just look British while the B52 and Corsair look American. Could anyone but the French had come up with the Mirage? Or the USSR the Bison?

That trait is getting lost as computers take over the design process.

I saw it fly this year at the RNLAF public days, and it was for me the height of the show.
It's huge and still very majestic.

the Harrier and the F-14.

Harrier because it's a BRITISH VTOL jet. and the only one like it.

the F-14 because of GI Joe and the Skystriker. and Top Gun. but mostly Joe...

i also like...
the Apache, the Cobra, the A-10, the F-16, F/A-18, MV-22, F-22, F-35, Tornado, F-4 Phantom and the EE Lightning.

and the RAH-66 Comanche before tehy stuck that fugly radome on the rotor hub.

The B-52. Let's face it, they still fly them today-which boggles the mind when you think about it. These babies have been delivering payloads for half a century. I mean, you didn't see a lot of Dehavilland Jennys in 'Nam, now did you? What a plane!

The Tu-95 is in a similar spot. They were first flown in 1952, and the Russian Air Force plans on keeping them in the air until at least 2040.

They look great too, they have an air of menace and ruggedness about them.

Britain used to make some great looking military aircraft. The English Electric Lightning (for the name alone!) and the Handley Page Victor which received not such a great V-Bomber name but looked almost otherwordly.

Wow, the Victor is nuts. The cockpit alone looks really crazy, and taken in combination with everything else...

Very cool, though.

WW2 era- the de Havilland Mosquito, the Wooden Wonder.

Modern- the F14 Tomcat.

Why? It's just... all about the curves, baby. And the varied loads and roles - variety is the spice of life.

F-16 I have loved this plane for many many years. It has smooth lines (F-16a and c not the later Israel makes) with the thin wings and a cool canopy. Then during the first Desert storm it seems even cooler that it was on the front line of many of the bombing missions.

A-10 These were based outside of my town and would do mock bombing run every summer. Also they are way cool during air shows with their great low speed maneuvers.

F-4 Old beast of a plane that commands respect.

SR-71 Cool, secret, sooooooooo fast and looks likes it was made in the future. Cannot believe some of the things this plane could do considering when it was built.

F-22 I am not a huge fan but I know it can do amazing things. Also I think it is old how this plane has change designs in everyday products, like Lambrequins and Enzo.

Has anybody said the F-18 yet? I have found that it seems like you are a F-16 fan or the F-18 not both what do you guys think?

The CF-105 Avro Arrow. :techman:

Ahead of its time and a damn awful shame that it was cancelled. :( I'm going to have to go see the replica in Toronto some time...

^ I've never seen the replica, but I have seen the nosecone of RL-206 here at the Aviation Museum. It's rather sad, you can quite clearly see the scarring from where they took blowtorches to the fuselage to cut her up. :(

I could never pick just one, so I'll give ya a list:

The dreaded ME-209:

The P-38 Lightning:

The Stuka (With or without plasma cannons):

The P-47 Thunderbolt:

The F4U Corsair:

The B-17 Flying Fortress:

The P-51D Mustang:

The F-16 Falcon:

The A-10 Thunderbolt II:

The Mig-29 Fulcrum:

And the F-22 Raptor:

So many models to choose from. My all time favorite is the A-10. As a former grunt, I loved that aircraft. When it was around I knew that it would save my ass.

As for my general list of favorites: the F-4 Phantom, P-51 Mustang and the F4-U Corsair.
