It does seem a bit odd to announce this intent before the first movie has even come out. You'd think they'd at least wait to see if they have a hit on their hands.
It'll never happen but I would kill to see a Dumbledore / Grindelwald book.
I don't know about a book but with a 5 movie series announced you may get your wish in movie form.
I'm confused on the timeline here. Grindelwald's war was in 1939-1945 concurrent with WWII. This movie is in 1924. If this series is going to cover that war, are they really going to jump forward 15 years at some point?! Is "Fantastic Beasts" the Hobbit type prelude to the actual story?

AFAIK the only date that was specified was his defeat in 1945. As with Voldermort's activities (and the real WWII for that matter), there could have been years of build-up prior to the outbreak of a global war.
So yeah, in theory at least he could have been causing trouble and building his power base as early as the 1920's and when it finally boiled over, the war itself could have started earlier and lasted longer than the parallel muggle conflict.
Actually FBaWtFT the movie takes place in 1926. And if they go forward with the planned 5-movie series I bet they'll film "the appendices" as well to fill the 5 films just like they did in The Hobbit trilogy (which was also WB).
Have they (and by "they" I suppose I mean JKR) ever specified what the connection was between WWII and whatever Grindelwald was up to? Was he backing the Nazi Party? To what end? Get the Muggles nice and oppressed under a totalitarian regime so it's easier for the wizards to dominate them en mass? Either way I'm assuming the real world tie-in point would be the Thule Society. From Indiana Jones to Hellboy, genre writers sure have gotten a lot of mileage out of those mythology nerds over the years!
