Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

It does seem a bit odd to announce this intent before the first movie has even come out. You'd think they'd at least wait to see if they have a hit on their hands.

Announcing the sequel(s) first is psychological marketing. Make everyone think you have tons of confidence in the movie and they'll (theoretically) be more inclined to go see it. See this summer's Ghostbusters, for instance. Though I don't think the HP franchise actually needs that kind of maneuvering (I suppose it's better to be overzealous than apathetic in marketing).

It'll never happen but I would kill to see a Dumbledore / Grindelwald book.

I don't know about a book but with a 5 movie series announced you may get your wish in movie form.

Well he was mentioned in the last trailer. - Well his attacks in Europe, so seeing Dumbledore's Enemy/Lover could happen aswell as seeing Albus in general.

I've just had an idea, maybe films four and five will also see the Gaunt family with some of the material not included in the film version of Half-Blood Prince including Sir Patrick cast as Marvolo.

I must be really dense because I never got the undertones of the Dumbledore/Grindelwald relationship, but now I think about it, it makes perfect sense.

I'm confused on the timeline here. Grindelwald's war was in 1939-1945 concurrent with WWII. This movie is in 1924. If this series is going to cover that war, are they really going to jump forward 15 years at some point?! Is "Fantastic Beasts" the Hobbit type prelude to the actual story?

AFAIK the only date that was specified was his defeat in 1945. As with Voldermort's activities (and the real WWII for that matter), there could have been years of build-up prior to the outbreak of a global war.
So yeah, in theory at least he could have been causing trouble and building his power base as early as the 1920's and when it finally boiled over, the war itself could have started earlier and lasted longer than the parallel muggle conflict.

Actually FBaWtFT the movie takes place in 1926. And if they go forward with the planned 5-movie series I bet they'll film "the appendices" as well to fill the 5 films just like they did in The Hobbit trilogy (which was also WB).

Hell, even the real life Hitler started building his power base in the early 1920s and was elected chancellor of Germany in 1933. Even if they wanted to mirror things more exactly, if the movies move forward in real time (like the MCU), with a new movie every 2 years, they could have Grindelwald in a position of global power and terror by the third or fourth movie.

But, of course, they're not going to mirror things that exactly. They'll structure their story in the time frame they think is best.

Have they (and by "they" I suppose I mean JKR) ever specified what the connection was between WWII and whatever Grindelwald was up to? Was he backing the Nazi Party? To what end? Get the Muggles nice and oppressed under a totalitarian regime so it's easier for the wizards to dominate them en mass? Either way I'm assuming the real world tie-in point would be the Thule Society. From Indiana Jones to Hellboy, genre writers sure have gotten a lot of mileage out of those mythology nerds over the years!

Learning about Grindelwald and Dumbledore's roles in the movie has definitely gotten me a lot more interested in this, and it was already my second most anticipated move for the rest of the year.

Deathly Hallows heavily implied Grindelwald was running a concentration camp and slaughtering Muggles.

While it is common in fanfiction to suggest a connection between Grindlewald and the Nazis (possibly via the Thule Society) for a variety of reasons and motives, there is no evidence or even implication of any connection in canon that I am aware of. However, I think you'd be on stronger ground if you suggested some level of connection between Voldemort and post-WWII neo-Nazi and other far-right elements.

^I don't know, I can't see Voldermort lowering himself to even speak to a muggle, let alone associating with those kinds of bottom feeders. I mean what could they possibly even offer him?

My impression was that (at least to begin with) Grindelwald was for ruling the muggles as much for their own good as it was for his belief of Wizarding superiority. So at least with that in mind it'd make some kind of sense that he'd try to shape muggle society into something more compatible with his plans. Voldermort mostly just saw himself as superior and was set on ruling Wizards, not muggles. They were less worthy than even house elves in his eyes.

Is it possible that in the Potterverse, the World Wars didn't happen?

Didn't Frank the groundskeeper of Riddle manor get injured in WW II?

Can't wait for this movie and the ode delve in to the potter world again!

Given that the basic premise of the franchise is that it's all supposed to take place in "our" world, it would seem odd if there's such a massive difference. So yes, I'm sure the vast majority of muggle history is the same, it's just that it's only part of what really went on.

I can see where Cracked were coming from a few years back when they said J. K. Rowling was becoming the new George Lucas. Of course we've also had Sir Peter Jackson doing the same thing in the meantime.

Those trailers feel oddly familiar. I keep expecting the music to fade into I Am The Doctor at any moment, though perhaps All The Strange Strange Creatures would be more appropriate.
