Yes, you are correct. I typed before thinking on that one (seeing as I have a Master's degree in music I should not have made that mistake, LOL). Thank you for the correction (I edited my post as well).
However, lets not forget Lieder ohne Worte (Songs Without Words) by Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn. It is a collection of eight books (six "songs" in each book) for PIANO. It is strange, because they are always referred to as "songs."
By formal definition "songs" have lyrics though, you're right!

1. They took a chance with the concept of VOY and decided to be different. Knocking them across the galaxy freed them from most of the canon and DS9. They could "boldly go" again. Although they (the writers) messed up some along the way and didn't IMO utilize all they could have, they (the crew) did indeed boldly go again.
2. Voyager the starship. This is important b/c it's the first Trek that's centered around a ship not named Enterprise....and they made it worthy of the Trek name. No, it's not a Galaxy or Sovereign class flagship, but it has its advantages (atmospheric entry capabilities, transwarp, jelly innards, etc.) Those things were technologically innovative. It was the first ship we really got to "know" that was created after the '80s. We didn't get to travel with the Enterprise-E the same way we got to know Voyager -- and it had some cool tech stuff even though it wasn't as big or intimidating. I thought the designers did a fantastic job with the Intrepid design and the cast also made it feel like a "home" with them being so far away.
3. They had no back-up. The Feds were on the other side of the galaxy and if the Voyager crew didn't solve the problem themselves, they were toast. A little extra pressure we didn't see in TNG or DS9.
4. The crew. I won't say what everyone else has already said but there were some real gems added to the Star Trek franchise (Janeway, Tuvok, 7, Dr.) despite the clunkers (no need to name names when we all know...)
5. Q and the Borg. Misused? Overused? Maybe and Probably. But they weren't carbon copy depictions from TNG -- they unfolded in the context of VOY and so be it. Again, despite some flaws, it's still Q and the Borg. Good stuff for me.
All that said, I don't enjoy VOY as much as TOS, TNG, or DS9....though its vastly superior to ENT imo. Even though I'd rank it 4th in the TV series....it still offered up some pretty damn good Trek in many instances....which makes it better than most stuff on the tube.

Another thing that I loved about Voyager was the cast. It was the CAST itself that made the show what it was..one of the best casts I've ever seen in a TV show. But I do remember watching it for the first time thinking: I'm not sure if this will be great or not but I'll give it another shot next week. Then the next week, was hooked on the show's plot and characters. And of course, I watched it because of Chakotay. 
I remember he was the FIRST face I saw when watching "Caretaker" for the first time and I thought: who IS this guy?! He looks interesting! And loved his tattoo!

Here I agree. I remember when I watched "Caretaker" the first time. I took an immediate liking to the characters, ALL of them actually. OK, I did have some problems with The Doctor to start with but still I did find him likeable too.
I liked the way the charcters were introduced in that episode and the way they were. More exciting than any other Star Trek series I'd watched (and believe me I really love TNG too). After watching "Caretaker", I could hardly wait to watch next episode, which I didn't either since my first contact with Voyager was via borrowed video tapes so I borrowed Parallax/Time And Again just two days later!
Anyway, I did find the characters great and I also liked the premise for the show so I kept on watching and was even more happy when a TV channel close to me started to air the series a couple of months after I watched the first episode so I could re-watch the episodes and tape them (by then I was at the beginning of season 2 with my borrowed tapes).
I must state that I clearly enjoyed every episode in seasons 1-3 even if there were some "bummers" in each season. I really enjoyed season 2. Only "Threshold" was bad and it was at least funy here and there.

I think the "old skool" Voyager had the most distinctive vibe in the entire show, it felt different compared to what came later. I think this was due to the fact there were no enemies and there were no Borg/getting in touch with the AQ/Barclay episodes and it really felt like its own series. Having Kes go changed this vibe as I felt the show felt a lot less "warm" after her departure. I do agree about season 5 being the best though.

, I think he has a weirdly square face.
I consider VOYs big three to be Janeway/Chakotay/Tuvok. But the supporting staff were so endearing - Torres, Kim, Paris, even loved Seska - she was so wicked! But I Digress. It was the characters and their interaction that did it for me. Otherwise it's just a ship of fools in the DQ.

Big 3 refers to the three characters that had the most attention lavished upon them, therefore that certainly does not include Chakotay or Tuvok.

I agree on most of the comments here, especially about the distinctive vibe" in seasons 1-3 and the fact that the show lost a lot with Kes.
However, I have to disagree about season 5. I didn't like it.
