Fans, what don't you like about VOY?

That's because in 2003-Present it's easier and less expensive to do that sort of CGI. Back in 1995 it would've cost more money to keep changing the ship's CGI model and the physical model, and Paramount/UPN was trying to save a lot of money with VOY which is part of why they stopped using the 8472 aliens.

Yeah, I understand that, but rather than ignore it they should've been more creative in how to show that time was taking it's toll.

Voyager was a very good show, but it wasn´t Star Trek per se. It was a show set in the Star Trek universe. Here´s why.

Star Trek is about space exploration, not going home. It´s about "Let´s see what´s out there", not "How many light years are we from Earth?"

Star Trek is about a team working together in a professional manner like in TOS and TNG, and not about a group of baby boomers at a college campus in the 60s and 70s. That´s what Berman, Pillar and Taylor wanted when they talked about adding drama to Trek -- having a bunch of boomers arguing, instead of acting like a team. That´s why the show lacked believability in many ways. The simple truth is that the crew wouldn´t have survived in real life.:techman:

I don't look at it that way, when somebody mentions Star Trek to me I don't think about a spaceship out exploring, I think of Vulcans, Romulans, Klingons, Borg, Cardassians, Breen, Dominion... Star Trek isn't a concept to me, it is a universe filled with interesting characters and interesting races with iconic spaceships and several different eras. It's like Star Wars in that regard, the Star Wars universe is still the Star Wars universe even when there is no wars taking place. The same is true for me when it comes to Star Trek, they don't have to trek in order for it to be Trek.

Well, I am not surprised you think that way since your favourite show is DS9:bolian:

In my view, though, the core of Star Trek is going where no man/one has gone before. Also, the name "Star Trek" implies that.

The spinoffs did capture that sometimes, but not most of the time. I´d say that is probably one of the main reasons why the shows were less popular -- because they are not about exploring undiscovered worlds and humanity, but about exploring the world of Star Trek and the characters within that world.

Til the day I die. ;)

Not really, a trek merely describes a journey, it doesn't necessarily involve an exploratory element. Voyager was on a journey, a long trek back home, and every week they were visiting new worlds or regions of space that no human had been to before because no Federation starship had been out that far. Janeway wasn't content to just sit back and let the ship travel at warp 9 for 70 years, she was constantly stopping the ship in order to explore new things just like in TOS and TNG.

I can understand why some people don't think that DS9 is "real Star Trek" because they were on a space station meeting the same aliens every week, but Voyager should have no problem fitting within the definition of Star Trek which you gave.

Trek's not just about exploring space, it's about the human adventure in general and that includes exploring youself too. The Trek adventures were just as often sci-fi adventures as they were character exploration stories using sci-fi stuff as mere plot device to enable that. DS9 in that regard is very much Trek (though this faded a bit as the war storyline took prominence) in that it also explored it's characters. Sisko said so himself in the premiere.

I don't know, the fact that DS9 took place in space onboard starships & space stations still keeps that element.

Yes, but in the "exploration of one's self" it was as much Trek as anything else. And without seeming as some New Age neo-hippy stuff.

Actually, that is how I would describe DS9. Voyager was much more of a Trek for me than DS9. :) (But no worries - DS9 was very Trek for me too. Enterprise is the one I don't know how to fit in the picture....)
