Fallout 4

Going by what's being said, the game looks like a significant improvement over FO3 mechanics wise, but apparently the main story is as lacklustre as one might expect given Bethesda's track record.

Though I am tempted, I think for me this is one best left for a GOTY bundle once the inevitable bugs have been fixed, the equally inevitable DLC has been released and the modders have gone to work.

Modders?! We don' nee' no steenkin' modders!!

:D

Honestly, even though this is going to be shitty Bethesda-brand Fallout, I've pretty much played New Vegas to death (1590 hours according to Steam) so I'm starving to play ANY new Fallout content at this point. As such, I'll be playing it the moment it launches tonight (and I took off work tomorrow and Wednesday as well :p)

Does anyone ever play a Bethesda game for the story?

I do, although it's not so much for the immediate story but for their ambient storytelling and world building.

Daggerfall's and Morrowind's were fine stories in their own rights, even.

So far, I'm enjoying the game. I'm not very far into it, but I like how they've streamlined the searching and scavenging, and the combat is definitely faster paced and tighter than previous FPS Fallout games.

So, because literally EVERYTHING can be used for crafting now, I've gotten kind of OCD about looting. Progress has been really slow because I'll go to a location, loot everything that's not nailed down, haul it all back to Sanctuary, dump the junk into the workbench, go to the next location on the map, rinse, repeat.

Also probably took me about two hours before I could initially tear myself away from Sanctuary and head to Concord, as I was running around using the scrap function on fallen trees, ruined beds, broken down cars, etc. MUST... CLEAN... UP... EVERYTHING... NGH!

Ha ha ha....that happened to you too, eh? :)

I also have this habit of "Oooh....cool weapon! WHOA! POWER ARMOR!!!!!"
Then comes that whole "overencumbered" problem. :guffaw:

I would if they ever actually told a good one and I don't see any reason why games like this *can't* have a more engaging narrative.

So what's everyone doing for their first character? After numerous false starts yesterday so I could get a feel for the game, I've finally settled on Erin O'Reilly, based off one of my New Vegas and Wasteland 2 characters, a tinkerer who specialized in repair, so I'm initially taking all the crafting perks like Armorer, Gun Nut, Scrapper, Science!, etc. I actually tweaked one of the Asian presets for her, just raised the upper eyelids a little to "de-Asian" her, changed the hair and eye colors, changed the nose style and added a dusting of freckles, and viola! She'll probably eventually focus on energy weapons for combat, but they're pretty scarce early on so I'm still just using a modded 10mm pistol at this point.

My character's name is Heather. I tried to base her (appearance wise) off of Heather Mason in the game Silent Hill 3. She's friendly with the Brotherhood of Steel. She's stealthy, working on her lockpicking and hacking skills. She's a pretty decent shot, specializing in energy weapons. I try to engage enemies from afar whenever I can, and for that, I crafted a Pipe Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle. I also have a Scoped Laser Musket, and a weapon that one BoS leader gave me. Stun batons come in very handy for silent attacks, and if you can get the drop on a group of enemies in CQC without having to expend ammo. Dogmeat is my companion, and he's definitely handy. I have to keep reminding myself, too, that when I get overencumbered, he (or any companion) can carry some of the gear.

I am loving the hell out of this game. They've refined a lot of stuff (especially the scavenging mechanics), and seem to have expanded on a few other things. This game is going to occupy a lot of my off time. :)

It'll be a while before I get around to FO4, but I'll probably end up going with my usual smooth talking intelligent gun-slinger type build I've use since all the way back in FO1.

And yeah, I'll also probably end up creating a female character. Ever since 'Mass Effect' I've gotten in the habit of preferring female PCs whenever given the option. Having said that, by classic Fallout characters were all female too, but ME is definitely where the preference set in. Also, I'm rubbish at designing male faces. Like *really* bad.

Aye...plus, I have a philosophy about playing games either that have a third person perspective, or the option for third person view....but, I'll avoid voicing for fear of offending the more politically correct sensitivities. :)

I've only gotten to play a few hours so far. But it seems more linear to me than Fallout 3 was.

Looking forward to eventually playing this. I don't have a PS4 yet, so it will likely be PC. But speaking of PC, apparently they really need to work on the keybindings and keymapping as the controls are horrendous. Hopefully they patch a fix to allow remapping.
