FACT: Jonathan Frakes was asked to grow a beard in the break between seasons one and two of TNG so that he wouldn't appear so womanly in scenes with Colm Meaney. When the producers realized this ploy had failed, They shifted the Planned Riker-Keiko love storyline to O'Brien, and Colm Meaney became a fixture of the series. To this day, Jonathan Frakes maintains his trademark beard out of hatred for Colm Meaney.
