Expanse Season 4 Teaser and Preview

That clip was the odd one to show since it’s quite a big moment for a certain character.

As has been mentioned above, the book splits the action between the drama down on the ground with the colony and up in orbit where the colony ship is still parked. It's possible they nixed the ship altogether, but if that's the case we may not get my favourite beat in the whole book.

I'd assume the colony ship is the big spinny mother we see at the beginning of the trailer. Interestingly, that's in anamorphic, but in the landing sequence, the frame only opens up just before the Roci lands, suggesting the conceit isn't that unexplored space as a whole is in widescreen, but the planet, specifically. I'm curious how that shakes out. Also, if films and TV keep doing multiple aspect ratios within one work, somebody should probably fold that in to a video format, especially with extra-wide monitors coming out. It'd be really cool to see "New Terra" in a movie theater (or wide monitor) and have the black bars on the side for the Sol scenes and the frame become physically larger for the extrasolar scenes, which is the intended effect, even though the screen is actually getting smaller for those scenes in the 16x9 presentation.

One thing I'm excited about the most when it comes to The Expanse is finally joining in the conversations here. I've been thinking about doing a rewatch of Season 3, but I almost feel like I need to rewatch the entire thing. It's been almost a year already and this is a series where you can pick up new things on rewatching. It could be a much more rewarding experience.

Along with the season 5 announcement, Amazon also put out another season 4 trailer.

Well, it's no "To Boldly Go Where No One Has Gone Before," but it makes its point.

Nice to get a new trailer so soon after Comic Con. If it weren't for the Star Trek excitement, I think the winner of Comic Con last week (From my perspective and interest) was The Exapanse. Really looking forward to the new season.

I'm thinking of rewatching the whole series sometime in October/November. Should finish reading Nemesis Games by then.

Awesome news about season 5 renewal - best news of the day.

Shame there’s no O’Neil like character on board. He would have called it the Enterprise. :)

That was quick with the Season 5 announcement.

They know The Expanse has a built-in fanbase, and it's going to be a few years yet before Amazon builds a catalog of SF original content to rival Netflix. I don't think they can afford to cancel right now.

Nice thing about streaming is companies like Amazon and Netflix are looking for content so cancelling a show that has this rabid of a fanbase is really counter productive.

Well, yes and no. Netflix likes to cancel shows around the end of the second or third season, because that's the sweet spot between how many episodes there need to be to attract subscribers (and keep them from cancelling in frustration when their favorite shows end), versus a high number of episodes making the show feel like too much of an investment for new viewers, versus the increase in expenses as Netflix pays more for shows (on top of the production costs) the longer they go on.

Of course, Amazon has a different incentive structure. I expect it's still the case that a lot of Prime subscribers are still just in it for the fast shipping and don't think of Amazon as a place to watch stuff. And it's the CEO's pet show.

So have they pretty much been doing one book per season?

No.

Season 1 adapted 3/4 of Book 1, Leviathan Wakes; Season 2 adapted the final 1/4 of Leviathan Wakes and 65% of Book 2, Caliban's War; and Season 3 adapted the remaining 35% of Caliban's War and roughly all of Book 3, Abbadon's Gate.

Season 4 will wrap up any remaining plot elements from Abbadon's Gate that weren't covered in Season 3 while also covering Book 4, Cibola Burn.

Not really. The first two season breaks went in weird places, in the middle of the novels. If I have it right, the end of book 1 corresponds to season 2 episode 5, book 2 goes from 2:6 to 3:6, and book 3 is covered more compactly in the last 7 episodes of season 3. The end of season 3 is the first time a break between seasons has aligned with a break between books.

Plus they've rearranged some story elements from book to book, so that certain characters are introduced earlier or later (notably Avasarala showing up from the start instead of debuting in book 2).
