News Exclusive: Scott Bakula Eyeing Star Trek Return In President Archer Series Pitch From ‘Enterprise’ Producer
To be fair, the brand has been struggling for some time. The faltering/cancelation statement is certainly true and a "course correction", as they say, is definitely needed. How that correction will actually manifest itself, however, remains to be seen and is currently in the purview of pure conjecture.
A lot of people seem to be hanging their hats on some kind of involvement by Shatner, which I doubt will be the case. He likes to stay active, and I've always been a big fan of the ShatMan, but deep involvement back into Trek might be a bit much for him these days. I could, of course, be 100% wrong about that, so
SDCC will hopefully provide some answers that will no doubt explode into more overdrive hair-on-fire conjecture. That, in-and-of itself, will be a reasonably decent source of entertainment while we wait for more Trek to be produced.
In any case, I wouldn't get too excited about Paramount producing anything of substance (outside what's already been made) for the 60th. Maybe some re-re-re-re-mastered BRD's of the movies.

At this point, I'd half-way expect OTOY to release something more meaningful before the year's end than Paramount for the 60th.

Somehow they’ve scooped all the major Hollywood media in announcing Kurtzman’s firing.
I want Trek to take like 5 years off and then relaunch with something new and fresh with an entirely new cast. If that doesn't happen, can Shatner just retire. The last thing Trek needs is a 95 year old being a part of it to reminisce of old times.
As for Bakula and trying to bring this thread back on topic, I think I would want him more in a recurring role, or a founding of a federation romulan movie. Having Section 31 being a streaming movie wasn't a bad idea, but the movie itself was horrible. Having a movie or miniseries (I have been watching BSG on Pluto a lot lately and kind of miss the idea of the mini series, but maybe they are still there only expanded) isnt a bad thing.

When I said ‘production,’ I meant something that Shatner would have to physically do. Other than providing a voiceover à la Takei in Lower Decks and Koenig in PIC, I don’t see Shat doing more than that. Even the recent commercial he was in was just a combination of him just sitting there and special effects for everything else.

I either read Shatner say or heard him say like a week or two ago saying (I don't recall the precise wording now) his time for Kirk / Star Trek, has now passed. Dukhat's guesswork above me, seems to be the only likely case now for The Shat and Star Trek.

It sounds interesting but that's only because I kinda like ENT and Scott Bakula, so I kinda always wanted to see him back in some way. I doubt this show will get made though, I presume he will cameo in some future Trek episode but what do I know
Unless he's already filmed something for SNW's fourth or fifth seasons or SFA's second, than there are no future Trek episodes for him to appear in.

Why would they prematurely cancel the two shows they were currently producing and then announce some new show?
They've already made an official announcement. Skydance wants to focus on movies, with perhaps a reboot of the franchise. Whether this actually comes to pass, who knows. But that's their current stance.
