Evidence of SNW being a possible alternate timeline from TOS

I remember once, back in the day when ENT was the whipping boy and accused of disgracing and destroying the franchise, that people claimed it couldn't be in the same timeline as TOS because Captain Hernandez is a woman.

(snip)

Just like ignoring how the 90s were scared of same sex couples. There were people that even claimed the transporter had 'cured' homosexuality.
Must be why McCoy doesn't like the transporter.

If Paramount made a ton of money off of Picard. Don’t you think they would’ve told him to work on a follow up?

It is their IP and their streaming platform.

Why would they. Picard was scheduled for 3 seasons only. Kurtzman was working on SNW and S31. Also STD was wrapping up.

If I have the timeline of it right Akiva had wanted to do a Pike show prior to Pike joining season 2 but you can bet if Paramount didn't see the potential for profit they would have passed on SNW. As much as they make decisions I disagree with it was clear Picard season 3's viewership was down to the TNG cast reunion and a follow up show would not have been like the TOS movies with the entire old gang back on a ship together every episode so it wouldn't have capitalised on that viewership.

It was pretty close with that Tawny Newsome thing.

That Tawny Newsome thing was never actually a thing, I believe. It was a reward for the work she had done for the franchise.

I’m not sure anyone here ever saw that as a serious option.

I think it was a mistake Paramount announced that project so early before it was even greenlit or the concept itself was fully settled. I get they were trying to capitalize on the buzz of Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien being attached, but it turned into much ado about nothing.

I emphasize that it was Paramount’s call to announce this because they’ve got the final say on this stuff over Kurtzman/Secret Hideout.

Only SW of the 3 franchises you mentioned had a full reboot that decanonized movies and tv shows (Ewok movies, Clone Wars 2003 show, Droids and Ewoks cartoons).
That's not a "full reboot" just because the Ewok movies went. A full reboot would have decanonized everything. It was essentially just a reboot of the EU.

I think the merger stuck it on permanent hold tbh, but the announcement at comic con gave it some added credibility.
I hope one day someone spills the beans on what the story of that season would have been.
I have a weird feeling that a story from the series may have been folded into Series Acclimation Mil. When I watched the episode, it gave me a "workplace comedy" vibe, and all I could think of was some of the hints about DS9 being an inspiration.

I could be way off, of course.

Season 1 of Academy was written before Paramount announced the Newsome/Simien project.

Um no.

Akiva Goldsman was told by Alex Kurtzman that Paramount was doing a new Streaming show set in the 23rd century that would be a prequel to TOS, and would he like to be a part of the production staff.

Akiva said yes, and ASSUMED (without speaking further to Alex Kurtzman) that it must be a show centering on either Robert April or Christopher PIke. When he showed up he found out it was Star Trek Discovery and the tie in character to TOS was Spock's previously unknown adopted sister, etc.

All through Season 1 of Discovery Akiva was pitching a crossover scenario where the 1701 (commanded by Christopher Pike and with Spock) would show up and assist. Eventually that grew into what became the storyline for S2 - with the 'teaser' appearance of the 1701 itself in the last episode of ST: D S1.

Once Anson Mount was playing Pike in S2 and Etan Peck was playing Spock; Akira started pitching the idea of a full 100% Pike based series during the run of ST: D S2 and Kurtzman and Paramount, (with the help of the positive response and buzz they were seeing from the press and fandom to Pike and Spock being a big presence of ST: D S2) fully greenlit Strange New Worlds straight to a S1 10 episode order.

The person who tried to pitch a spinoff series prior to Star Trek Discovery airing was in fact Michelle Yeoh, who pitched Section 31 as a series directly. At that time, both Kurtzman and the Paramount suits thought it was too early to even think about spinoffs before they saw the reaction to Star Trek Discovery; but near the end of ST: D S1 Kurtzman also greenlight starting development on a Section 31 streaming series that eventually became the Section 31 streaming film. They were planning it as a series (and there were 5 full S1 scripts written) but when Michelle Yeoh won her Academy Award, even though she still wanted to do a Section 31 project of some type - they weren't sure they could work out a schedule that would allow her to be the lead of a series with all the other offers and commitments she had; so yeah it morphed in the Section 31 streaming film - and the schedule was so hectic Paramount turned down a request to delay filming because they wanted to work some more on the script - but Paramount wanted it available to stream by a certain date, and to make that date, they had to go with the script they had.

They didn’t think to capitalize on something that is popular? Is that the question/statement you’re actually going with?

Again. Kurtzman was in charge. It was his decision what to bring to tptb. He did not want legacy. It wasnt his idea. Matalas was gone. He could have went to matalas but he didnt.

Yup.

Welcome to business. They steer the ship and direct what they want made.
