EURO 2008 - The Official Trek BBS Thread

Switzerland-Turkey was a surprisingly interesting game considering the difficult turf, and surprisingly fair considering the history between the two teams.
And Switzerland is out, none of the home teams in the quarter finals, and Turkey has a better chance to get through than the Czechs - I wouldn't have predicted that, I had high hopes for Switzerland.

Congratulations to both teams, very exciting to watch.

Portugal and Czech Republic started off very nervous and that reflected in a very poor first half, despite the two goals. But the second half, Portugal came on to win. Deco was unbelievable and is making one hell of a Euro. Ronaldo also starting to come up, with a goal and assist.

But I fear for the future now that Scolari is going to leave the team, including the rest of the Euro. Because of the connection between the coach and the team, I don't know how will this affect their play.

So far my support for teams who do or should have Arsenal players in them is having mixed results.

France (Gallas) - Mucked up big time against Romania.
Croatia (Eduardo) - Poor performance despite the win.
Czech Republic (Rosicky) - Okay win against the Swiss but screwed it up yesterday.
Holland (van Persie) - Brilliant win against the Italians.
Spain (Fabregas) - Superb performance capped by a goal and an assist for our Cesc.
Switzerland (Senderos, Djourou) - Out of the competition.

Good luck to the now ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann with Germany, too.

The French deserve all they get for leaving Gael Clichy out of the squad.

Italy (Ambrosini) - worked hard but lacked creativity.
Italy (Gattuso) - Look out of sorts. Possibly need to retire from the NT so his professional career can be extended.
Italy (Pirlo) made some nice passes and one very good FK that could've gone in. Otherwise not as good as he was in WC 06.
Italy (Zambrotta) - bombed foward and created a few very good chances. Best Italian player on the pitch against NL.
France (Flamini) - oh wait the astrology boy didn't even call him up.
Croatia (Simic) - hardly plays for us anyways. Maybe one game per year so I don't care.
Czech Republic (Jankulovski) - Shutted down Ronaldo on the wings and but got owned by Deco for the first goal. Could've done better to block it. Made a few nice crosses today and was decent from set pieces.
Italy (Inzaghi) - see Flamini.

I'm enjoying this greatly too. :D

Even if Germany ends up making the second goal.
It's especially funny watching it on german tv, the commentor sounds like he's seriously considering jumping out of the window. ;)

What a terribly game by our side. I stopped watching after around ~60 minutes.
At least the Austrians can be giddy at the prospect of eliminating Germany and possibly advancing themselves, depending on how the game later today turns out.

Too bad. I wouldn't have mind the Germans winning (no really! and yes, I am Dutch...). But this is fun too. :)

And I just have to say: Schweinsteiger, how stupid can you be, in the last minute falling for silly provocations and getting a red card. Ah well, the way he's been playing die Mannschaft is better of without him.

Croatia were largely the better team and with a bit more patience they might have won by three or four.

^Nope, no sign of him. Team was Pletikosa, Corluka, Kovac, Simunic, Pranjic, Srna (Leko), Modric, Kovac, Rakitic, Kranjcar (Knezevic), Olic (Petric)

He, exciting game between Poland and Austria (for me at least) - both fucking incredible and kind sad that of all the players on the pitch it was Ivo Vastic who scored the equaliser, Austrian football really hasn't moved much since '98. ;)
And although I guess it was kind of deserved (although I suppose the second half was very boring to watch for neutral observers), I have no idea yet whether the penalty itself was correct ot not - I had virtually no view of the screen in the ridiculous "fan-zone" at that time...

Anyway, a great chance to fuck up the Germans in the last game and maybe, maybe get through to the quarter finals if by some lighting strike of unbelievable luck Austria manages to somehow get a victory out of that game. :D

If Germany plays with the same spirit they did today, Austria has a change. But they need a win...

Looking at the Croatia team I was thinking an unified Yugoslavia would actually be quite awesome. A back line consisted of Corluka, Vidic, Ivanovic, and Simic is very good.

A midfield that has Modric, Kranjcar, Janković..

A forward partnership of Vučinić and Eduardo.

And then Poland is not allowed to beat Croatia with a bigger goal difference than Austria beats Germany. Lot of ifs. My money's still on Germany going through, but who knows...

Beenhakker wasn't happy with the last minute penalty. Dutch tv had a short interview with him yesterday 15 minutes after the match and he was very angry. He felt the Polish had their victory stolen from them by a referee who wanted to show that he dared to give a last minute penalty for a minor offence.
