EURO 2008 - The Official Trek BBS Thread

Where's a fado player when you need one...

And in terms of getting goals, they do have this one guy who has put away what, 42 of them this season?

I think he's named after some US President or other.

(Although, it is odd how he has scored a lot more than any of the regular forwards that the Portuguese have available...)

Not that I'm trying to imply they can afford to get away by relying on just one player, of course.

In any event, here's hoping that those who speak a última flor do Lácio, inculta e bela can do the business, all the same!

Some major news for Italy...

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has been ruled out of Euro 2008 due to an ankle injury

This will be a huge blow I fear.:( Cannavaro was the outstanding player when Italy won the World Cup 2 years ago, indeed, I thought he was by far the best player in the 2006 World Cup. I just hope it is not a fatal blow for Italy, who alway's start slow.

Portugal. One wonders how the British media portray Portugal this summer.
They have Ronaldo, darling of Manchester United, who are fawend over by the media, so they may decide Portugal are "our" team this summer.
But alas! It was Portugal who knocked England out of the last World Cup, and they were cast as evil, dirty, diving bastards by our media two years ago. Will this still be the case?

I still believe the BBC will be supporting France, especially if big Marcel Desailly is a pundit again.

^The BBC will see which side has the most Liverpool players and go with them. So probably Spain.

No Nesta, no Cannavaro. Panucci possibly playing in the center.:guffaw: Though Donadoni will most likely go or at least I think he should go with Chiellini and Barzagli. Materazzi has been in a bad form this year. Although Gamberini is another option to pair with Chiellini. Those two would form a very English partnership. Strong and brutal. The midfield is still awesome with Pirlo, De Rossi, Gattuso and Camoranesi. The new capitano should be Buffon.

What else other than a bunch of diving, cheating cunts.

The problem is the lack of United's midfield players in the Portuguese team... ;)

Not really considering the only decent one we have left is Nuno Gomes, which has been having shitty seasons for the last few years. This is perhaps the major problem Portugal faces, and why they sometimes try to make Ronaldo play as a dedicated striker... :(

The team that has beaten England every time they meet on the Euros and World Cup since 2000? ;)

For your entertainment. Particularly when I get it all wrong:

Group A: Turkey, Portugal, Czechs, Switzerland
Group B: Germany, Croatia, Poland, Austria
Group C: Italy, Netherlands, Romania, France
Group D: Spain, Russia, Greece, Sweden

Group Stage winners:
Group A: Portugal, Turkey
Group B: Germany, Croatia
Group C: France, Italy (although I would like Holland)
Group D: Spain, Russia

QF:
Portugal v. Croatia: Portugal
Germany v. Turkey: Germany
France v. Russia: France
Spain v. Italy: Italy

SF:
Portugal v. Germany: Germany
France v. Italy: France

Finals
Germany v. France: France

I think Portugal, the Czech Republic, Germany, Croatia, France, the Netherlands, Spain and Russia will get through the groups but that's as far as my overall prediction goes.

It's all about whether or not the really, really big names show up - Ronaldo, Henry, Ribery, Fabregas, Torres etc.

Oh, I always pick down to the finals just so I can laugh later at my early guesses.

I agree its all on who shows and a little luck. Based on the France v. Colombia friendly I watched last night - a surprisingly hard fought match - Ribéry looks like he has every intention of showing up. I don't know that Ronaldo has the same freedom in the Portugal side to be as effective as he is for United, but we'll see. As for the others, who knows?

In yesterday's training session, Scolari tried Ronaldo a striker, with Nani taking his, CR's, United position. I think that is a bad idea, but lets see what will come of it.

I watched the Spain v. US friendly. And unlike France, Spain do not look anything near polished. The US, granted, showed far better than they did at Wembley where they forgot what the word "possession" meant, but a Spanish team with that talent should have readily dismissed them, not scored a late goal against the American's second choice team after multiple subs. Fabregas had some nice passes, but the midfield looks out of sorts overall. Torres had only a few sniffs at goal.

I picked them to come out of the group, and stick by it, but based on what I saw it could be another in a long line of Spanish disappointments.

Damn it, I just drew Austria in the office sweepstake. That's £1 down the drain. :scream:

Hehe, that's bad luck. For us only the game against Germany counts - if we can screw them everything's alright, otherwise it doesn't really matter anyway. :D

Damned straight :D .. it's the one game I'll actually have to pull for Austria. I usually don't bother, as it just feels too much like emotional suicide. I'll be pulling for the Czechs, as always.

Anyways, my crystal ball predicts: The final will be Russia vs. Czech Republic, Russia wins.

They won't make the quarter finals with Aragones in charge. He shot himself in the foot with his squad selection.
