Ethan

Yes, guys, let's chill out and not derail the thread further. The title is fine, though a spoiler warning in the title might have helped because it does discuss a season six episode. I would imagine, though, that a lot of discussions right now are going to revolve around season six, so any thread is kind of "enter at your own risk" around here unless it specifically says it's devoted to another season/an incident in another season or says "no spoilers."

The point is that the title gave away a spoiler without even having to enter the thread, just entering the forum was enough.

New episode airs.

Shortly after thread called Ethan appears.

Don't need to be a rocket scientist to guess that Ethan just appeared in that episode.

Hence, episode spoiled.

Suppose I start a thread called "Penny" where I ask "Do you think Penny exists in this new timeline?" Have I given away the fact that Penny appeared in "What Kate Does" (or LA X)?

The difference being, Penny was not in the episodes you mentioned, and Ethan was.

One is the name of a character we haven't seen in a while, the other is a surprise denied to anyone who hasnt seen the episode.

If its a new episode where a guest star is meant to be a surprise, and you post who the guest star is in the thread title straight after the episode airs, then yes, that's a spoiler.

Is it really that much to ask that surprise guest star character names not be in the title of spoiler threads?

I am not anti american, but it seems to me all the people who are not bothered by the spoiler and those for whom the episode cant be spoiled, ie, those in america who have already seen it.

For those of us in other countries we weren't really given a choice.

And you knew this from the fucking title... how? You didn't, that's how. Which is why the title is not a God damned spoiler anymore than "Penny" or any other character's name would be.

Because I saw the title, didn't open the thread, watched the episode and Ethan was in it, what could have been a cool surprise was not.

Without that thread title, Ethan wouldn't even have been on my mind, with it there was the thought, well I guess he's in the episode that aired JUST BEFORE THE THREAD APPEARED!

I'm not sure how clearer I could make this statement without the aid of diagrams.

Hopefully this will make it easier.

Sorry, no. The title is not a spoiler.

Does the thread contain one? If you stretch the definition to include anything that the opening credits can tell you, then yes, possibly. But that would make it a painfully mild one at worst. And certainly no worse than you'd find in any other thread with any other title.

But does the title -- which is what you're crying about -- contain one? No. For the title to be a spoiler, it would have to say something like "OMG Ethan Was In The Last Episode of LOST And He's a Normal Doctor OMG OMG OMG!" That is a spoiler. "Ethan," like "Penny," is not.

Christ.

Yeah keep swearing, that will make your point more valid.

The opening credits is a spoiler only if you know the name of the actor playing Ethan.

This is seriously the most ridiculous fight. biotech, if you are that spoiler-phobic, I'd seriously recommend staying out of the Lost forum for the duration of the show's run in the US. It's not like the original poster titled the thread, "OMG I can't believe they killed X!!!" or "FINALLY--Y and Z hook up!" It's a character's name. Get over it. Checkmate, please let it go as well. If you guys continue this, at all, you're getting warned.

So now... back on topic.

I did not realise what a fuss I'd caused as I had not been back to this thread for a while.

My understanding of the word "spoiler".... Information relating to anything that hasn't aired yet. Since this episode had aired in the U.S, the country in which the show is made, I did not consider any information relating to Ethan to be a "spoiler". The show had already aired.

I have not watched most of TOS's third season, would somebody that put a thread up on that board titled "Medusan" be "spoiling" things for me? No. I avoid threads on that board that I can deduce will be about things I have not seen.

I've had the opportunity to watch "What Kate Does", "The Substitute" and "The Lighthouse" at the time of U.S. broadcast as I am currently holidaying here. When I return to the U.K. I will use my common sense and stay out of this board from Tuesday evenings (date of U.S. airing) until Friday (date of U.K. airing). To quote a U.K advertisement, "Simples". :)

Apologies to any of our American cousins who have been offended. Please don't think of this guy as representitive of the population of my country as a whole. Some of us can use our common sense when it comes to a television show and the internet.
