A great episode and one that scared the beJesus out of me when it first aired. A perfect example of the influence that Gene Coon brought to the series.

Terrific episode that also scared me as a child. I never understood why Kirk couldn't keep phaser #2 with the miners and they decided they'd use clubs if they had to, given that phaser #1 couldn't do the trick. 40 or so pistols wouldn't be too much to ask, for the interim investigation, me thinks.

I love the Horta design. We so rarely got truly alien creatures in Star Trek that weren't "energy beings" or some such nonsense. It's great when they pull it off so well, despite the technical limitations of the time.

First episode I ever watched. (*Sniffle*) Truly a classic, and with a great message!

Definitely one of my favorite episodes and an incredible concept. One aspect that I liked was the truly alien design of the Horta, as well as the first (and only?) time we see a Security Chief for the Enterprise. Also, he doesn't die.

Great episode, in my opinion.

Behind the scenes, "The Devil in the Dark" is the episode that was filming when Shatner got the news that his father had died. For the show's sake, he opted to finish the day before traveling back to Canada for the service.

Favorite episode, first one I recall watching. Cant argue with the message No Kill I

A solid 9 for me. Funny that when I first saw this episode, it was not a favorite but has grown on me and I really appreciate it now. Would be in my top 10-15.

I thought he flew to Florida for the funeral.

Simply one of the best Trek episodes of all time, I gave it a 10.

I appreciated the Ed Appel character, a Federation citizen, dumping on Starfleet a little here, it was a nice touch that added a bit of realism:

You're all pretty tough, aren't you? Starship, phaser banks. You can't get your starship down in the tunnels.

Also, another of my favorite Spock lines of all time, something that I actually hear inside my head whenever I'm trying not to be late:

I shall quicken my pace.

I wonder how the Horta and the miners got along far afterwards.
Hope they never depleted their mineral deposits.
Great episode. One of the greatest.

That's how I remember the story, as well.

It doesn't seem like that arrangement was going to last for very long, to me. I guess we'll never know - did any extended universe stories go back to Janus?

Maybe the Horta can't digest the pergium, gold, platinum, or any of the other valuable goodies that are in the rocks of Janus VI. I'll leave the rest to your imaginations.

Odd that even loved this ep as a kid, since it didn't have any spaceship action at all. O guess it was 'cause i was a monster movie fan too. Or that it's just a great story.
