Yes, what became Star Wars: A New Hope was almost always to be the hero’s journey. But from that point, things got complicated. First, Obi-Wan was originally to live so the creature on the side of the road wouldn’t be there. ESB was one possibility for a sequel. Splinter of the Mind’s Eye was a potential low budget sequel planned of Star Wars bombed. There was no creature on the side of the road there. ROTJ is basically George’s original episodes VI-IX condensed to complete the story because his personal life had fallen apart. His initial VI was supposed to have Luke fight Vader again and kill him. (Vader was not to be Luke’s father originally.) Han would die. Luke became a Jedi. Leia rules the galaxy. The sequel trilogy involved Luke discovering the “other” who would be his sister going through a similar set of events on the other side of the galaxy. Episode IX involved the two finally facing the Emperor. All of this has a huge impact on the story and how it’s told.
And certainly I’d really recommend the books I’ve tried time and again to suggest to you. Either that or search out the initial drafts of these movies. Most are readily available on the web. The development of these movies isn’t as simple as you want them to be.

Never are there happily ever afters for the heroes in mythology, save for the occasional exception.
Even in the EU, our heroes lived happily... for awhile. The fact of the matter is: that's life. Even if they don't do another movie with the sequel trilogy characters after all of this is said and done, assuming everyone survives, my personal headcanon (as much as I hate that term) will suggest they'll all have at least a few more adventures after all of this.
Indeed. But, the expectation seems to be that we are shown the happily ever after in the films, which doesn't seem to be the intent of either Lucas or Abrams.
Correct. If one looks at either The Art of The Force Awakens or The Art of The Last Jedi, one can see even George’s initial plans: the galaxy would be in chaos again and our heroes would be split up and not “honoring” the happily ever after.
Had a sequel trilogy happened closer to Return of the Jedi, I could see a desire to push a story that dealt with the aftermath of Endor and actually see a new threat rise from the vacuum. But when you have thirty years of story to account for, better to just hit the ground running.
Cool. Who are the voices inside his head? Vader is clearly the last one, but the one before that sounds like a bad impression of Yoda. Didn't sound like Snoke.
I think it was supposed to be Snoke. But it was a little iffy in the execution.

Really intrigued to see Palpatine's machinations with Kylo. The cave area was really freaky. Couldn't tell if the shadowy figure behind Kylo was supposed to be a Force spirit or just a statue.

I can't imagine Lucasfilm is going to be OK with this.
If you are interested in where things started, I'd recommend the comic The Star Was, which is an adaptation of Lucas's original rough draft. I read it a while back and I enjoyed, and it's especially interesting from a historical perspective.
Some people have clicked away form the clip because it seems spoilery, but I agree with you. I don't think it's spoilery. It's more intriguing than ANY of the other marketing of the film. Should have been the trailer they released FIRST back at Celebration. It's not spoiler to be interested in the actual narrative.

I saw the latest clip and recognized some of the elements from the "spoilers" released through reddit. I will watch the film, for, one, I have never missed watching one of the trilogy (original, prequel, Disney) films in the theatre and, two, I need to satisfy a voyeuristic lust to see this film crash and burn.
So you're going to give Disney money to prove how much you don't like one of their films? Yeah, that'll work.
