Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

No they don't need to know everything but they should probably have a general idea of at least somewhat where it's going you know what they start to write a script you think they'd have an idea of where the trilogy would end but this Trilogy feels like a 4th grade writing assignment where one kid starts and then the other kid continues like oh the dog walked into the room and now there was a lightsaber there

A fourth-grade writing assignment that has done roughly $3.5 billion at the box office. I'm sure Disney would love more of those.

The final draft is saved by some decent acting, editing and first of the kind SFX. If the same script was written today, I doubt any studio would've touched it.
The studios barely touched it back then. It was considered a "dumb kids movie" and regarded poorly by many of the British crew. Ladd Jr. was really the only one who saw the potential and was willing to give it the money, with Fox banking on it being a small cushion if "Damnation Alley" didn't perform to expectations.
This keeps getting repeated, but I don't think it is remotely the truth. Vader chokes the shit out of a dude five minutes in, chokes the shit out of more later. Dude gets his arm sliced off with a light saber. It wasn't for kids.
Even if it was targeted to kids (I doubt it, given the Samurai and Western influences as well), that doesn't mean we write poor dialog for our kids O_o

JJ Abrams came up with the idea to have Palpatine in the movie? No way, he'd never rehash old things that Star Wars has done before

GI Joe has heavy artillery vs a terrorist organization.. it has ninja assassins..

still targeted to kids

maybe .. omg.. maybe kids like that stuff

Animated violence has always been treated differently that acted out violence.

Maybe...and I know this is crazy...it wasn't completely targeted at kids. And, even if it was, that doesn't excuse the dialog. At all.

Those straws are getting thin.

A New Hope was rated PG in 1977. Which meant parental guidance was suggested. Not a kids movie.
yes they didn't want it to be rated G.. though targeted at kids, they didn't want to alienate other potential audiences.. so the burning skeletons were added to do just that.

also, from imdb Out of all six live-action Star Wars films from the original and prequel trilogies, this is the only one to feature profanity more than once. "Hell" and "damn" are used several times, and R2-D2 "swears" in droid language, but he only chirps and beeps. The language was added to get the movie a PG rating, and avoid its being stereotyped as a G-rated "kids' movie".

Source? Because that's a new one to me.

Nevermind the neck snapping, the violent blaster shots blowing out of people's chests (good old squibs), the blood on the floor from an arm being cut off, etc.

Kids like scary stuff. Star Wars gives that in a fairly safe and reassuring way. It’s essentially a live-action Disney film, even before Disney bought it. Even the ones Walt made had scary scenes and violence, but good always won in the end.
