Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

it might not. but it SEEMS like he is noit a ghost here.. but he may be.

in any case.. that's the only thing I know about Luke's appearance in the movie so I wish people would stop accusing me of "spoiling" shit
If it pertains to the movie and might shed light on what goes on then politeness would be to spoiler tag it. It's not that hard.

My thoughts and they’re just thoughts are...
This is yet another flashback to the destruction of Luke’s Academy, again shedding more light on the incident. If it’s even in the film at all.

On The Late Show last night, J. J. Abrams revealed the first word spoken:
At

Let the wild and rampant speculation begin!

I don't have any more information than anyone else. I saw a picture in Vanity Fair months ago.. with Luke in them. not spoilers
That's not an actual picture from the movie, it was part of a group of portraits Annie Leibowits did that were released back when the movie was first announced.
JJ Abrams has said that C-3PO will play a big role in The Rise of Skywalker. I'm glad to hear this, the small roles for 3PO and R2 has been one of my biggest disappointments with the Sequel Trilogy.

it was from Vanity Fair, and was included with other actual photos form the movie

As per the notion that it was from the time the academy burned down.. he is way older in the pic.... so.. no

So, still potential spoilers. From certain point of view :)
If the studio puts it out as part of the marketing it's not a spoiler.
VF articles are part of the marketing
You personally might treat it as a spoiler, but that is on you.

On a separate note, Trevarrow came out and says that JJ came up with Palpatine after he left and JJ came back.
Way to not write a trilogy, Lucasfilm. clearly Palpatine is a hail mary pass from a story group that had no trajectory.
How did Maz get the lightsaber? A good question for another time.. but that won't be answered. Who is Snoke? We'll let the next writer come up with that.. oh wait.. it doesn't matter. Same with Rey.

Snoke will probably get a passing reference as being Palpatine’s pawn in the new movie. That is literally all we NEED to know about him. But he’s not going to have some secret awesome origin. He’s not gonna be Plaugeis.

Maz getting the saber? Completely unimportant to the plot. Merely a detail some fans want.

The mystery of Rey and her origins is a continuing part of the trilogy. If you can’t see that, you’re blind.

I'm starting to think some folks are so dumb that they need everything spelled out in small words right at the beginning. If that isn't done, then they consider the whole thing a failure.

I mean, I can understand having questions, but this is the sequel trilogy, wait until we get the final movie before complaining that there are no answers.

Many people treat it as such. It's just a polite thing to do.

And if we never got the PT we would have never known how Obi-Wan got the lightsaber.
Who is Snoke
Who is Palpatine? Did we know in ESB or ROTJ, other than being "The Emperor?" Oh, wait, we didn't even know his name by the end of ROTJ.

These "problems" are only problems because people want them to be problems.

If this was a 600 page novel, yeah. I’d want all of this stuff fleshed out. But it’s a sub-2.5 hour film that is not only it’s own story, not only wrapping up three films but completing a 42 year old nine film saga beloved by generations. There’s a lot to cover. Minor mysteries like who Snoke is? Unimportant.

So, do you think that Lucas shit out the original trilogy fully-formed in 1977? Of course not. There were lots of changes along the way.

You hold the sequel trilogy to an impossible standard that you clearly don't hold the original trilogy to.

No they don't need to know everything but they should probably have a general idea of at least somewhat where it's going you know what they start to write a script you think they'd have an idea of where the trilogy would end but this Trilogy feels like a 4th grade writing assignment where one kid starts and then the other kid continues like oh the dog walked into the room and now there was a lightsaber there

I recommend FSM pick up Michael Kaminski’s amazing (but unofficial) work The Secret History of Star Wars. It is a fascinating look at the history behind the writing of the films. Along with J.W. Rinzler’s comprehensive Making of books for each entry of the trilogy, you can learn a lot about how the cover story that everything Lucas did was pretty much made up as he went along.
