Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

New, in depth article and lots of cool photos on Episode IX in the new Vanity Fair. Spoilers, duh.

My question is this: If Luke is a Force ghost, do you think he should get his hand back or should he exist as he did in life?

I would say as we saw Hayden as a force ghost at the end of ROTJ and not as Vader then I would say we see Luke with his hand in TROS.

Everything looks so cool. Super excited!

Also, why in the world would Luke not have his hand?

Also Rey and Luke fighting on top of the Falcon, hype!

Edit: on second look, I don’t think it is. Maybe part of the death star with all the water.

Yeah, that was great article. We also finally got to find out who Keri Russell and Richard E. Grant are playing, which I know a lot of people have been curious about. And we also got to see what kind of creatures they used the horses for, which is something I'd been curious about.
Obviously I'd already been pretty excited for this, but this article definitely got me even more excited.

Those horse creatures look epic. Can't wait to see Finn in action!

Wait, we are going back to that?
Is this another mystery box that can't be left alone? Is it already disappointing? Will it disappoint or just radically change people's perception of Rey by the end of the Trilogy?

Allegedly, JJ's m.o. are either superficial remakes, or mystery boxes that don't get resolved, either of which are allowing the audience to fill in the blanks instead of having an actual story to do that work. Even before TLJ, media articles came out saying there was no pre-made plan between the three movies. And that video I posted from youtube some time ago saying how TFA had nothing to begin with, which it didn't apart from some flashy visuals of varying amounts of substance of which any real substance could and would have been delved into at the time.

Then again, various scenes in the original trilogy also show a lack of plan, the Sequel Trilogy is still being unfairly maligned.

And the fact that Rey is so perfect for every new adventure she gets into, she's either a Mary Sue or there's an amazing revelation - maybe she's the result of a genetic experiment involving Palpatine and has been her puppeteer all this time as he, mustache and all, survived that plummet (why not, Leia survived in outer space and force-pulled herself to safety).

It's still hilarious how the sequel trilogy has the first order, which just exists like that undefined blob on the kitchen table with no setup or narrative but we're supposed to hate it and, worse, the first order has the same style of technology with no clear innovations since. Stagnation or is there a point where the laws of physics and science "max out"? Again, where the heck in the star wars narrative is any of this set up. Nobody in the audience (including review sites) should have to pay $15 to see an undefined blob they have to define the narrative for after a certain point, regardless of any allegory hinted at.

Still, it's just a movie and audiences live in the moment. Just like in 1983 when "Return of the Jedi" came out.

Looks more like an artist's rendition than an actual photograph. Looks cool but I hope the big screen version looks as epic as that - especially as it almost looks as if the terrain changes from green pasture on the right to barren dirt leftmost.

After backlash from TLJ, JJ is going into full 'give the people what they want' mode, which makes me think Rey will be the midichlorian love child of Darth Plagueis and Darth Bane.

When Luke 'ghosts' in 8, his artificial hand seems to fade into The Force as he does... at first it seemed like something overlooked during production. I thought - if Luke is channeling himself (his crude matter) into The Force, why not include the arm? It had been part of him for 30+ years.

Anyway, I'm sure they will show that Luke's Force ghost has two human hands in 9. It jives with Ghost Anakin being out of Vader's armor.

Would have been hilarious if ghost anakin had just been a limbless Hayden covered in scar tissue.

It will disappoint regardless, and people's perceptions of Rey are locked in so I doubt (or am at least highly skeptical) that there is anything in Episode 9 that will change those opinions.

Again, I'm highly skeptical that's what JJ is doing.

JJ is good at telling the stories that he wants to tell.

And I'm not confident this is the best way forward.

He can be, but Star Trek and TFA have shown he’s also very good at taking established franchises and turning them into exactly what they need to be to get tickets sold.

The results have been fine, if not amazing, which I think is the best Star Wars can hope for right now. Good but not great.
