Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

MAZ: Oh yes, he can. You will find him with a red ploom flower on his lapel... rolling on a high stakes table... in the casino... on Canto Bight. POE: Canto Bight? - No, no. That's... Maz... Is there any way we can take care of this ourselves? MAZ: I'm sorry, kiddo. This is rarified cracking.
Bizarrely, Canto Bight is the name of the city, not the planet that it's on. Yet Maz used the preposition "on." It's pretty shitty dialog, if you ask me. It should have been "in," not "on."

I’ve noticed that a lot of the sequel trilogy is based on some early ideas for the original trilogy. One of the ideas for Return of the Jedi was for during Luke’s final battle with the Emperor was that Yoda and Obi-Wan would appear and help, eventually Obi-Wan would return to a physical form and help finish the fight.

I wonder if that’s the plan for Luke.
I am wondering the same thing, since much of Yoda's interaction with Luke reminded me of some of those story beats.

Eh, works for me.

It does? Then, why did you quote the dialog in reply to @Set Harth's assertion that "the film never bothered to tell us the name of the planet"? If it works for you, then you're certainly not challenging his assertion. So, what was the point you were trying to make?
Just citing dialog. No point intended. I was just curious if Canto Bight was mentioned in the dialog so I looked it up. It was not a comment of judgement or assertion.

Actually, the film never bothered to tell us the name of the planet, I guess they expected us to look it up on the internet or read a book or something. This follows in a long tradition of other SW films having done the same thing, including Rogue One, TFA, ROTS and even ANH.
Didn’t Rogue One have a name card for every planet except Mustafar?

And what planet(s) did ANH and ROTS not name?

Was Tatooine named in ANH? I don't remember. ROTS has a bunch of random battle planets with Jedi dying in Order 66. I don't recall of they were named in the film.

Oh right, yeah. Not sure how I could forget those.

Also I think you’re right about Tatooine.

Is it named in ESB or ROTJ? If it isn’t, The Phantom Menace would probably be the first time the name is said in any of the movies.

It’s the same with the word ‘Sith’ it was only ever mentioned in books/comics, BTS information and interviews and such before TPM came out.

Luke tells Lando that they'll meet him on Tatooine at the end of ESB. And just in case people didn't get the connection, when Han, Luke, and Chewie are on the skiff on the way to the execution, Luke mentions he grew up "here" before Han says "and your going die here, convenient", just to inform that Tatooine is both the place with Jabba that is mentioned in ESB, and was shown in ANH to be Luke's home.

Tatooine is named in the Holiday Special.

It’s also mentioned in the text crawl for ROTJ.

OK.... But the name of the planet is not mentioned, as he said.
Quick (maybe) follow up. I didn't post that to prove any point. I posted it because I was curious what the film actually said and wanted to share what I found. You can take that and use it, misuse it, abuse it, as you see fit.

In a more general note, for me, a film does not need to exposit all information, including planet names, how technology works, etc. Star Wars have never been that for me. It has been, in my ways, a far more personal adventure of working to learn more. I love to learn, and will read as much as I can about a work. But, in the end, the film is about characters, not specific names.

I don't really see where it's a problem that the planet Canto Bight is on, which is Cantonica according to Wookiepedia, is never named in the movie. The name of the planet really has no impact on the story, the only thing that matters is Canto Bight, and that is named in the movie.
Like @fireproof78 said, we don't need every single little tiny detail, just what's important to the story being told, and in this it was just Canto Bight.

^ No one said it did matter. Someone said that they didn't catch the name of the planet/were too lazy to Google it. Someone else pointed out that it wasn't actually named in the film anyway, following the pattern of the franchise established since the first film. Hilarity ensued from there.

Maybe Cato Bight is the only city on the planet (whose surface area largely seems to be water), hence the planet is also called Canto Bight.

Yes, the Earth City Humans are going all the way to the playoffs this year. Nice ring to it.
Never noticed the whole Canto(nica) Bight thing. Interesting. I've referring to the planet as Canto Bight in error. Cantonica sounds like a troubling medical condition.

I'd read the planet was mostly rock, but the spot where they put Canto Bight was terraformed to suit the tastes of the SW galaxy's wealthy gamblers.
