Enterprise lighting question...

Gotham Central

I noticed that the TOS-R versions of "The Cage" and "WNMHGB" have the nacells painted red and not glowing. I always figured that the engines were supposed to glow. The early models of the Enterprise had very limited lighting systems. In fact, The Cage version had no lights at all. However, that was an issue with the model (which was improved for the actual production). So I'm wondering if anyone else thinks that the TOS-R enterprise should have been given the glowing engines.

Are you talking about the nacelle caps or the impulse engines on the back of the saucer? You say nacelles but your post reads like you mean the impulse engines.

And in TOS-R, the nacelle caps glow on all the episodes to my knowledge.

Umm, the OP is right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmEuXsa4z_Q and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ICdcvapSQ8

The ramscoops stay dull dark red here. For those who think they should be the same in all the versions of the ship, the simple argument is that they are shut down at times. We did see the ramscoops of the E-D darkened by a shutdown in TNG "Skin of Evil", for example. But one might also argue that the scoops in those versions of the ship featured a bit more "visual stealth" that the later versions had to drop for technological reason X (most probably, increased power).

The main concept the folks doing the remastering tried to stay true to was to not go that much further than what the original effects bunch could've done if they'd only had the time and the money (and in some cases, an effects stage the size of an aircraft hangar). In this case, that means not adding a bunch of lights where there weren't any before, like the previously solid wood nacelle caps.

There were lots of other areas where they resisted the urge to do visual tie-ins with the other series, like the ship going to warp, tractor beams, playbacks on computer screens. They always tried to stay within the "only what was available in '66-'69".

In "staying true" though they changed the nacelle's in "Mirror, Mirror"

The mirror universe enterprise has the solid caps with points.

no big deal, but I didn't care for that liberty taken.

A bit off topic, im sorry, but...

I love the way that window is put in behind Pike, its a shape that makes it appear if it is on deck 2, beneath the bridge, which is staying more in line with traditional naval design where the captains quarters are usually behind or below the bridge incase he/she is needed in an emergency.

The shape of the new window suggests its that round kind of shaped one near the rear of the 'tear drop' super structure.
