Enterprise D saucer recovery

I like the visuals (i.e., the work columns built next to the saucer showing they've probably been doing repairs on the ground to prep it, the floating barges with the tethers, etc.).

But does it fit? Wouldn't they just get a couple of starships capable of atmospheric flight to tractor beam it into space and tow it? On the other hand, I think the TNG technical manual lays out a process where the saucer would be disassembled on the ground and the parts transported out.

Roddenberry.com just posted this video showing recovering the saucer and an old friend

Damn that is some movie quality VFX. I mean that shot of the saucer section on the ground and the tugboats above it.... damn. also Spock-O.

I‘m a bit confused. Why the TMP flashback and why are Star Wars vessel used to lift the saucer section?

It’s part of an ongoing project by the Roddenberry archives to bring to life some of the TMP era novel stuff.

We don’t know exactly what those ships were doing, the lines were not obviously under tension

This looks amazing. I just wonder where is it actually all going? Is there a purpose to this or a longer version down the line?

Yep. Its also a nod to the Shatnerverse because Spock visited Kirks grave in the first of his books, only in that one there was a space battle overhead and kirks body was beamed out
And it was at night if I remember correctly.

I‘m a bit confused. Why the TMP flashback?
I'm not sure if it was a flashback but more of a flash forward for TMP Spock? We saw the 1701 crashing into the atmosphere of genesis also.
