Enterprise A

wow. i had no idea so many people didn't like it. i really can't relate.

I happen to think its one of the better designs. But then, I'm vulcan.

What would the Enterprise-B have been? Probably not a new effects model, but maybe a Constellation-Class?

It probably would have been a new effects model in that case. This was a movie after all, albeit a low budget one.

The Constellation model did not have even a fraction of the detail needed for movie work, and even if it had the fugly little thing would never look graceful and powerful like the Excelsior does (from most angles).

Do you think the colour has anything to do with it? The Enterprise especially the A always looked quite bright almost white, but the Excelsior was very metallic/dark.

The part I never understood is why didn't they just keep the NCC-2000 and just put the name USS Enterprise in place of USS Excelsior?

I mean every other vessel to be named Enterprise had a different hull-number...

Let's see...

CV-6 = WW2 USS Enterprise
CVAN/CVN-65 = USS Enterprise the first nuclear-powered aircraft-carrier
OV-101 = USS Enterprise the Space-Shuttle Orbiter
XCV-330 / XCV-330A = SS Enterprise the Ring-Ship
NCC-1701 = The famous ship from the TV-series and first three ST Movies

The best argument I've heard was it was to honor the fact that Admiral/Captain Kirk saved the world. It's not a very good argument as Kirk saved the world before at least once (in TMP for example, V'Ger dismantled all of Earth's defenses, and had those plasma/energy probes orbiting earth threatening to wipe out the whole surface of Earth if the Creator did not disclose information).

See, I think it is a really good looking model, I just don't think ILM knew who to shoot it and tried to shoot it like the Enterprise model.

I also think it wasn't fair to compare it to the Big E herself, and that it has a stigma from that comparison too.

Well, I take it for what it was and how it was presented in III as a over-tech driven ship. At least thats Scotty's impression, and mine as well...though, I did like it far better than the awful Galaxy class that never really looked good at all... IMO

I think that was more how it was timed to look optically rather than the paint job, and even there I'm not sure it was all that consistent.

I suppose the hate for the excelsior was of its time, trek fans still only had TOS and all the loyalty that came with it, and with the excelsior having trans-warp drive and a captain who was looking forward to beating some of the old ladies speed records, i suppose it was inevitable that some would take a dislike to the ship....although ST6 rectified this by giving it to Sulu and having the two ships and crews fight side by side.

So in the end all was well.

I never liked her looks much. The Constitution design was much better and evidently they re thought the concept "cause the E looks more like the old 1701. I'm still pissed they blew her up anyway.
