This is precisely the kind of ambiguity that will cause years of argument amongst the fan base.
When are they going to learn .. Be Specific.
Then again looking at all of JJ Abrahms productions (especially Lost) he loves ambiguity.

Why is it that hundreds upon hundreds of hours of hectic-paced TV production manage to keep things like this straight, while a movie being worked upon for a full year or more gets all sloppy?
Both TNG and DS9 did many episodes dealing with enrolling at Starfleet Academy. All the shows featured numerous characters who had once enlisted or enrolled. Yet slips like this did not happen.
Then again, slips of other sorts did happen, in the shows and in the movies. It's just a bit funny that the writers or proofreaders would drop this particular ball after it has been bouncing up there for so many decades. It's not an obscure Star Trek detail or 23rd century futuristic perversity - it's standard 20th century parlance that hundreds of shows have gotten right before.

That's how bad things can get in this awful, awful war.
But spare a thought, if you will, for those if us on the sidelines. Those of use who will say "Ummm...dunno, really. Not bothered. Does it matter?" for we are not made of the stern, battle-hewn stuff that is required in these heady days of furious combat and wild-eyed righteousness.

To be honest, that line struck me as an odd way to put it, too. As far as it being pedantic or nit-picky goes, it is about getting language right. And, Trek has made distinctions between enrolling in the Academy and enlisting in Starfleet. Miles O'Brien enlisted.
Maybe the line in the trailer is taken out of context. We know that in the bar Pike is trying to convince Kirk he could have a good career in Starfleet. This scene was one of the snippets some saw, and the summary of it leads one to believe that Kirk had already been accepted to the Academy once, or at least tested for admittance (he tested "genius").
Could be that within the conversation, Pike means Kirk should at least enlist in Starfleet, even if he doesn't want to go through the Academy.

My reaction is basically the same as Basil's when Mrs Richardson complains that her money is ten pounds short - ie. over the top mock indignation and disbelief.

But it is odd that an Academy graduate like Pike would say, "enlist" over enroll if he meant the Academy. So, as I said above, within the context of the conversation, maybe that's not what he meant. After all, he said, "Enlist in Starfleet," which makes perfect sense on its own. He didn't say, "Enlist in the Academy," which would've been wrong in a dozen ways and I'd have to boycott the movie.
