Enlist in Starfleet

Crewman47

Commodore
Newbie
I just saw the March trailer and I noticed that when Pike is talking to Kirk he tells him to enlist in Starfleet. I thought that enlisting is what Crewman and NCO's do and Officers enrol as Cadets or can enlisting be used for Cadets as well?

Perhaps Pike told Kirk to enlist, but the rebellious young punk decided to enroll instead?

No other Trek production has used the word "enlist" to refer to the process of entering Starfleet Academy, AFAIK.

This is precisely the kind of ambiguity that will cause years of argument amongst the fan base.

When are they going to learn .. Be Specific.

Then again looking at all of JJ Abrahms productions (especially Lost) he loves ambiguity.

No other Trek production has engaged the subject on the level this film appears to do either.

Nice...I never saw this one coming.

Enlist vs enroll.
This thread should start a fight lasting several pages in true Trek fan fashion.

Why is it that hundreds upon hundreds of hours of hectic-paced TV production manage to keep things like this straight, while a movie being worked upon for a full year or more gets all sloppy?

No other Trek production has engaged the subject on the level this film appears to do either.

Both TNG and DS9 did many episodes dealing with enrolling at Starfleet Academy. All the shows featured numerous characters who had once enlisted or enrolled. Yet slips like this did not happen.

Then again, slips of other sorts did happen, in the shows and in the movies. It's just a bit funny that the writers or proofreaders would drop this particular ball after it has been bouncing up there for so many decades. It's not an obscure Star Trek detail or 23rd century futuristic perversity - it's standard 20th century parlance that hundreds of shows have gotten right before.

Oops. I hope it doesn't. Wouldn't like to be the one who started such a thread. Hope it'll stay civil.

I'm just kidding...maybe :p

Though I'm sure this will be used as another example of how the people making this film are hacks, who don't have a clue and don't know what they are doing etc etc

Finally the time has come! A new day shall dawn - and in the misty morning light we shall see two opposing forces, each as convinced of their righteousness as the other.

They shall meet in bloody combat. And yes, it will be bloody. Words will be said. Harsh, uncompromising words. Someone....someone will claim retrospective pre-adolescent metaphorical molestation has befouled them.

That's how bad things can get in this awful, awful war.

But spare a thought, if you will, for those if us on the sidelines. Those of use who will say "Ummm...dunno, really. Not bothered. Does it matter?" for we are not made of the stern, battle-hewn stuff that is required in these heady days of furious combat and wild-eyed righteousness.

To be honest, that line struck me as an odd way to put it, too. As far as it being pedantic or nit-picky goes, it is about getting language right. And, Trek has made distinctions between enrolling in the Academy and enlisting in Starfleet. Miles O'Brien enlisted.

Maybe the line in the trailer is taken out of context. We know that in the bar Pike is trying to convince Kirk he could have a good career in Starfleet. This scene was one of the snippets some saw, and the summary of it leads one to believe that Kirk had already been accepted to the Academy once, or at least tested for admittance (he tested "genius").
Could be that within the conversation, Pike means Kirk should at least enlist in Starfleet, even if he doesn't want to go through the Academy.

From Memory Alpha:

The enlisted ranks above that of crewman were not commissioned officer ranks. To distinguish them from commissioned officer ranks, the term 'non-commissioned officer' was used. All enlisted personnel were subordinate to commissioned officers in the chain of command.

The Academy has a separate and specific program for the training of enlisted crewpeople.

Admission into Starfleet Academy begins with the acceptance of the candidate's application... Once the former candidate is accepted, they may enroll in Academy courses.

Apparently you enlist in Starfleet and enroll in Starfleet Academy.

God this is sad, in the extreme. Arguing over the most insignificant of minutae yet again. Wait a moment, I'll put on my enraged face..

.. My god, how dare they!! Think of the children. And THE WOMEN!

ffs, etc..

Honestly, does it really matter especially since we do not know how it is used in the entire context of the conversation - maybe EVERYONE enlists in Starfleet and they are tested for their Officer/Leadership potential. Minor nit to pick.

To be honest, that line struck me as an odd way to put it, too.

"Enlist" rolls off my tongue more naturally than "enroll", although "enrolled" tops "enlisted". :)

But it is odd that an Academy graduate like Pike would say, "enlist" over enroll if he meant the Academy. So, as I said above, within the context of the conversation, maybe that's not what he meant. After all, he said, "Enlist in Starfleet," which makes perfect sense on its own. He didn't say, "Enlist in the Academy," which would've been wrong in a dozen ways and I'd have to boycott the movie. ;)
