engineering water tubes

OK, I've heard a couple of thoughts on this but it's actually bothering me. What the hell are the water tubes for? My thoughts are some type of coolant system but I don't know. What do you guys think they are for?
 
The pipe that carries Scotty through it is labeled "inert reactant". I'm guessing it's heavy water.

The facetious answer would probably be "so we can transport Scotty in to the tube by accident for comedy effect". Sod the fact that even in "film reality", he'd have drowned.

Warp core cooling or something similar would probably be the best bet.

It's more likely that people thought it was unlikely that said water would travel through transparent, people-sized pipes in the middle of a warehouse.

What's great is I've only seen the film once! I'm a bit of a technophile, so I'm always looking at labels and designations. :D

Not so unlikely to find pipes where we saw them if some of the water was shunted into the matter/antimatter reactors as The Stig surmised.

I guess I'm a bit spoiled with TNG's replicators.

More likely the deuterium source of the impulse engine's fusion reactor.

The M/AM reactor would not necessarily need deuterium.

My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I do seem to recall that (according to the TNG Tech Manual) both the impulse and warp drives rely on deuterium. The impulse drives use it in the fusion generators and the warp drive smashes it into the anti-deuterium to make the ship go zoom.

And Deuterium isn't matter?

Of course it is. But so are banana peels, paint chips, styrofoam, AND REGULAR WATER, all of which react just as well with anti-matter as deuterium, and are probably a lot easier to obtain.
 
Water weighs 8 pounds a gallon and cannot be compressed. Large supplies of it on a starship for cooling purposes would take up a lot of space and weigh an astronomical amount. And if it was a coolant then it would be radioactive and Scotty would have been fried.
