Engaging in the Pursuit of Wild Fowl

Captain Robert April

Vice Admiral

A Concordance related inquiry recently came up which is completely confusing me. To put it succinctly, did Uhura ever wear a black armband in any episode? I don't recall anything of the sort.

Why was she wearing it? Was it because she was mourning someone, or was it a blunder? Getting different opinions on the internet. Does anyone know the real reason?

Fascinating....

Well, it's too low on the arm to be a mourning band. I suspect they were trying something similar to the belt she wears later on, a piece of velcro to stick her gadgets to.

Thanks, guys!

One suggestion notes that the episode was shot in early February of 1967. On January 27, just a few days before, the crew of Apollo 1, Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee, and Ed White, were killed when a fire broke out in their command module while testing the equipment.

The novel trilogy, "Crucible" by David R George III, which expands greatly upon this episode, mentions that Uhura's mother has recently passed away, hence the armband.

Bjo did wonder if it had something to do with the Apollo fire, and her mother passing makes sense, too, in that context. I just don't see the producers going along with that in any case, for any number of reasons.

Might be worth the risk of asking Nichelle if she remembers what was going on with this one...
