Empire: "Star Trek teaser poster for 2017 series"

It's just an early industry promo. There was one for DS9 made while the show was still being developed, but in the meantime they needed something to let people in the industry know the show was coming, so they used a stock photo of Spacedock One as a placeholder while the actual station wasn't designed yet, as well as a temporary logo meant really just for local station programmers.

It doesn't matter that it's not a "teaser poster", it's still the first artwork associated with the new series (as with the DS9 art you posted) so it's still "newsworthy".

Also, it looks just like the 50th anniversary insignia, which is exactly what you'd expect early promotions in the 50th anniversary year to use.

Only to those desperate for anything about the new show, even about placeholder artwork in a lobby. Otherwise, stuff like this is pretty common for new shows still in development. It's unlikely that this was really meant to be anything more than something done quick and dirty for in-house purposes.

At first I wasn't really impressed, because of the use of the same old Star Trek font and insignia.

But this early in development, the show probnably hasn't decided yet on it's own font (style), and this works great as a placeholder. Screams "back to basics", but still with a bit more modern ("realistic") approach (3d-logo), but still some colour in it.

The purple zone is a nebula (or possibly a galaxy) basic to the plot of the new series. The Starfleet logo being in shadow could mean that the Federation is under threat, but on the other hand the fact that it's lit from the other side could mean that the Indigo Nebula is the source of the Federation's only hope.

"The next chapter ... boldly going"
"Chapter" refers to a religious order, so I think we are looking at a religious pilgrimage (possibly by Vulcans) into a strange region of space which is supposed to hold a source of great spiritual power. They are "boldly going", so obviously they will meet with some opposition along the way....

In Star Trek's case, being 10 feet long probably helps.

Also worth nothing, thats the same ident/branding as seen at the end of that "These are the Voyages" tease. Not the same as the original in house poster.
