What moment have you really noticed anywhere in fiction where someone seems to be taking the sad and/or angry act way beyond where it should have gone, to the point it seems fake and unnecessary? Of course, excluding Metal Gear Solid (because for some reason whenever it appears there it's never forced-sounding). In the end, instead of the characters acting like real people with real emotion, they end up sounding like cardboard cutouts with recordings of poor voice acting playing in the background. Most of the time it's when a character has a looooong talk with the villain instead of just getting down to business. I'm sitting there going "I came here for storytelling and action, not manly posturing and much showing off of testosterone!".

For simplicity, I've included four basic options in a poll.

Of your poll options, the only one I am familiar with is the Star Wars one. And I didn't think that was emo. I thought it was retarded.

My vote goes to Metal Gear Solid, for that painfully prolonged scene where Otacon weeps and wails over his half-sister in "Sons of Liberty". Otacon is in my view an intensely annoying character and I never understood his popularity with fans. His half-sister "E.E." was even more irritating, and an awful lot of time was spent talking about their semi-incestuous childhood memories (no thanks, Kojima), before she got stabbed and died in his arms. Then comes the emo overdrive.

The same game as lots of over-emotional scenes with Rose as well, which aren't any more bearable.

I can't believe it was James Earl Jones who actually did that scream. It was so awkward, fake, and corny that I was certain it had to be done by Hayden Christensen. How could an actor with so much experience, who was known for being able to speak with such poise and dignity give such a horribly stilted line reading? That movie totally tainted everyone involved in it. Even made an awful actress out of Natalie Portman, coming very soon after her triumph in "Closer". Nobody could come out unscathed with the dialog those poor actors were given!

Luke's was good, but Anakin's at the end of RotS was just horrible. The moment where Anakin Skywalker finally turned into Vader was comical. That's just not right.

Any anime series I watch fits this category, specifically Neon Genesis Evangelion and what parts of Eureka Seven I saw.

^^
While on the topic of anime, I'd like to mention that Bleach is pretty emo sometimes too. Actually most of the time when it's not trying to interject humor into a life-and-death struggle...
