Elder Scrolls V

I sincerely hope the fifth game is not a MMO - I wouldn't want to see another of my favourite RPGs turned in to a MMO like KoTOR has been.

Some of us still like playing games on our own.

How do these games keep getting made, oblivion was bad enough, it was just so boring, tedious, repetitive and vanilla and the one before it was meh.

*Holds up a crucifix in the face of the MMORPG*

They just don't appeal to me whatsoever. Once upon a time I found the idea cool and wanted to join Ultima Online, then as the years rolled past and online gaming became more mainstream the appeal dropped drastically due to the inevitable increase in the "brainless arsehole" quotient.

Agreed. For me, no matter how well the actual game is constructed, having these other players running around tends to ruin the experience for me. Yes, I know there are excellent mature MMO players who take the game and the RP seriously, but in my (admittedly somewhat limited) experience a large segment of people on the popular MMOs are morons who I simply don't want to be sharing my gamespace with.

So I vastly prefer well-constructed single-player RPGs as opposed to MMOs. Oblivion is one of the best, so I hope they keep it in the single-player realm.

Basically what I'm saying is that once you dick around with the TES formula to make an MMO, I firmly believe that the end result will be (yet another) generic fantasy MMORPG and a TES game in name only. If that's the case, and granted it's just speculation on my part, then what's the damn point?

Certainly, and as I said I agree with you on that. I only took issue with your WoW comment (which I don't see as particularly generic in terms of setting).

Didn't mean to imply that WoW was generic, in terms of setting or gameplay. It's the innovator.

To be honest, the reason I see a TES MMO becoming generic isn't so much that you have to rework the forumla... as far as I'm concerned, it's because the setting of the TES games (and granted, I've only played Oblivion) is itself pretty darned generic. Remove or change the core gameplay and the IP just doesn't have anything interesting in it anymore.

Emphasis mine - if we were just talking about Oblivion, I'd completely agree. It is by far the dullest entry in the franchise as far as settings go. But Morrowind is so far removed from your typical Tolkenian trappings that it's positively criminal to tar it with the same brush!

No, Morrowind was tedious for whole load of other reasons. Not enough that I don't count it among my favourite games, mind.
