I really wonder why that is, to tell the truth. Why won't he take Doctor Who questions? I've never gotten the impression that he dislikes the franchise. It really boils down to this: Christopher Eccleston is an actor in the purest sense: He wants to lose himself in the party and embody the character. He's not a guy who's actually all that comfortable with stardom, or even with public speaking -- he doesn't really want to be the center of attention, or to appear in public. He's probably actually a deeply shy person.

When he does something, he wants it to be about the character, not him. He's not the center of attention, the character he is portraying is. He's not appearing in public, his character is. Etc.

In short, Eccleston is great at acting but not very good at being a celebrity - nor do I think he wants to be. He wants to act, not be famous.

Every job has parts of it that are good and parts of it that are bad. Why shouldn't he seek employment -- well-paying employment -- just because there's one part of his job he apparently doesn't like? Especially since he's said of Doctor Who that the most moving part of his time as the Doctor was realizing how meaningful it was for children -- which would be presumably another good reason to take the G.I. Joe gig?

Sounds like hes just not a huge fan of playing recurring characters.

I can kinda understand them signing him for just the one year. After all it was just as likely that the show would tank after one season then dissapear forever. No point going for a multi-year commitment at the time.
And y'know I loved his Doctor to death, but I've always wondered if the show would've been better off with an actor with more enthusiasm for the character.

Sorry! I didn't even realize that was a real nickname. I heard one of my British buddies use the term, and I thought it was something he had made up himself. I've just been saying it without realizing it was a real thing!

Actually he had finished filiming by this stage. You can tell when Ross asked him about not coming back with Ecclestone asking if he's really sure that the 9th Doctor would return.

I think it's a part he wanted, but only wanted to play a short time, it's an iconic role but not one he wanted to become long term. Probably he was worried about being typecast.

The Old Vic is around the corner from where I work, I walk past it every day on my way to and from lunch.

I passed a certain Mr. Ecclestone (who grinned at me) on the way back earlier today and I just wondered if he was doing anything there.

I've also passed Catherine Tate on the same street as well.

So why did Mr. Ecclestone grin at you?

Well I think it depends. Both CE and DT are great actors. Whilst I couldn't see Eccleston having the same undisguised glee at seeing Sarah Jane smith that Tennant had, I've never been able to imagine Tennant channelling the rage and hatred Eccleston did in Dalak- horses for courses I guess.

I think if Ecclseton had stuck around then it probably only would have been for another season. The survivor guilt Doctor had to change eventually, he had to get past the Timewar (well past his own guilt about it) so the regeneration worked quite well in that respect. I loved Eccleston's doctor to bits, but its hard to see how he could have gone on much further without a radical change.

Re the point about enthusiasm for the part, sometimes Tennant is a bit too fanboyish (onlty sometimes) so it may be that Smith sits very neatly between the polar opposites of CE and DT.

Patrick Troughton was exactly the same way with regard to his time as the Doctor. I think I'm right in saying that while he was the incumbent Doctor, Troughton appeared in only two or three interview-type programs, if that. Believing that doing too many interviews would destroy the mystique of the character, Troughton did very little publicity for the show (unlike Hartnell who did a lot, and in costume, no less), and was notoriously convention-shy, not attending a UK-based Who convention for years until John Nathan-Turner talked him into doing the 20th anniversary one.
