Early NX-01 designs at John Eaves' blog.

I didn't see this posted anywhere else here. John Eaves has put up two sets of images of early design work on the NX-01 here. One of them looks to be the same sketches that leaked out in tiny form some years back. It's nice to get a decent look at them now. :techman:

I hate that first one, but I like the second one. I like the final design better, though.

It's kinda funny to look at #2 though. It has a few things in common with the 1701 from Star Trek that people have been bitching about.

Man, that first version was actually closer to how I imagined the ship would look like when I first heard of ENT...that's irony for me.

When was the first time we found that the saucer can separate? That would make a difference on choosing one of those designs.

IIRC, there was production stuff during either TOS or Phase II that suggested that saucer separation was possible. But it doesn't matter since it wasn't mentioned on-screen 'till "Encounter At Farpoint." So they could have done whatever the hell they wanted with the NX-01. And they did.

Mentioned on-screen in The Apple from Star Trek's second season.

Good call. Either way, there was no need to for NX-01 to have to separate. Could have been an invention of the Constitution Class.

The only reason why a ship would need to separate is for the saucer section to serve as an escape vehicle. But since the NX-class was only a little more than a saucer section to begin with, well...

In the game Star Trek: Legacy, one of the non-canon ships added to the 22nd century looks a lot like the second one. (It's called Yorktown-class in the game)

Nice, I remember seeing a blurry White and black photo of those from a british Exhibition a few years back. Anyone still got those? They used to be up on the guardian of forever site but since that's gone...

The top one is an interesting departure from norm - Battlestar Enterprise as it were.

Indeed, I like it. I have grown to like the design that was used over the years, but I could easily see this working very well, with a few modifications to make it feel more retro. I think the idea that the warp engines are 'fragile' and must be deactivated and withdrawn for protection during normal flight might be interesting. It would also prevent them from instantly warping away at the first sign of trouble.

The second one doesn't look to be from the 22nd century at all in the context we got. More like something from between the movie era and TNG like teh Ambassador class.

I love the second one, Ton of potantial, althou I'm sure that if they did use that design the ''fans'' would have said crap like, That's KIRK'S ship! How dare they! that ship is TOO advanced for it's time and some such crap!:D(You know who you are) And I think the first one would take me some time to get used too, but I could live with it!

Both designs are nice but they look really modern...which is something a large portion of the fandom would complain about. Ultimately, I am happy with the ship we got

Soo...the ''continuity fascists'' woulden't be happy with Anything unless it looked like Flash Gordon ''or'' Captian Proton?:vulcan:

Welllll many certainly werent happy with the NX-01, saying that it looked too advanced (i speificaly remember hearing that argument here on the Trek BBS back in the day), so when you factor in that those ships look more advanced than the NX-01, I think its safe to say that the result would not have been pretty :borg:
