Dune Part 2 2023 (24, 25, 26...)

Wonder if WB will go back to Villenueve and ask about/for an Extended Edition of Part I to re-release prior to Part II just to buy some time. Doesn't mean they'll get it, but what else are they gonna do at this point?

Why do that?
Why not?

I gave KJA/BH a fair chance to blow me away with new Dune material, and when they failed time after time after time, I just expected that anything they would turn out Dune-wise would be crap, and I don't think I've been proven wrong. Yet. They could always manage it some day, but I won't hold my breath.

Ditto this movie. It had its chance to impress me, and it failed. I don't expect to be impressed by the sequel, either.

To me a pointless exercise save for being angry.

I'm angry about enough stuff in my life right now I don't need to hate watch anything to get my blood pressure up.

The whole hate watching thing really baffles, I just can't wrap my mind around watching something you know you won't like. I've watched a few things I wasn't sure I was going to like, but I always got in the optimistic hope that I will like it. If I know there is no way I'm gonna like it, I'm not gonna watch it, I just don't see the point in making myself miserable.

Once upon a time, I reached out to Kevin J. Anderson on MySpace (back when that was a popular social media platform) to inform him that he was being very offensive in calling the people who didn't like his Dune books "Talifans."

I also told him that we weren't one huge bloc of people, that we had various reasons for not liking them. I mentioned my objection to how he handled Duncan Idaho in the Houses trilogy, and damn if he didn't sneak a scene into Paul of Dune to rebut it...

He asked me, "If you hate the books so much, why do you read them?"

My answer: I kept hoping they would improve. So far they hadn't.

They still haven't. I've read the sample chapters on Amazon for the Caladan books and am still unimpressed.

But that MySpace conversation did include me explaining that the group of people on Arrakeen may prefer the original six books by FH, but I never once went along with the vicious way they took things too far.

There were some pretty awful social media posts by some of those people - people I ended up booting off of Arrakeen for attacking anyone who voiced anything positive about the nuDune books or went too far in criticizing KJA/BH (criticize the writing and the dubious claims behind The Holy Notes That Frank Left, but do NOT get personal about his wife and family - that's NOT acceptable). It's not that I thought the nuDune books were worth defending, but I don't condone forum bullying, whether it's member/member or staff/member.

Anyway, KJA ended up offering me a free copy of one of his non-Dune books. I didn't take him up on it as I really wasn't interested, but at least he got the idea that not every non-nuDune fan is vicious.

There's another reason to read the books, though. If I'm going to criticize them, I should know why I'm doing it. There are too many people who say "These books are crap. I haven't read a word of them and will never read them, but I know they're bad because (insert name of person I don't want to mention here because he's a stalker) said so and that's good enough for me!"

FFS, if you're going to hate a book series, do it for your own reasons, not someone else's.

Well if I don't, people will go "You can't say its bad unless you watch it", which I generally don't care about but its nice to be able to cut that stupid argument off and anyway I really enjoy the Dune franchise, so I want to know whats going on with it. I sat through David Lynch's pile of shit, so I can shit through the new guys eventually.

Besides, as a Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan we barely get anything on TV/Film compared to most other genres, especially in live action (as much as I love superhero films, they don't scratch the same itch as space style sci fi, outside of GOTG but that is kind of its own separate thing), much less big budget releases, so at some point I'm going to try most major stuff. I am very familiar with Dune, so seeing just how badly this adaptation botched it, compared to the terrible 80s film or excellent mini series, is a large part of the entertainment value. A movie, even a long movie or two, isn't all that hard to get through. Now, bad TV series generally get dropped after an episode or part of one because they're a much bigger time sink, but for Dune (2023/etc) I will eventually get through it, even if I hate it.

I guess that's were I differ. I've done the angry fan thing and it accomplished nothing. No relationships were built, I probably hurt more people in the arguments than helped, and my time is stretched between three jobs so time on media is limited. I'll not give things a chance. I'll move on.

I do miss MySpace though. How I met my wife.

Or you could just not talk about it, and find something else you have seen to talk about.

You can still stay up to date on a franchise without having to sit through something you know you won't like.

I'm sure there must other stuff out there that you can find to watch that you might actually enjoy.

Isn't it enough to just know they fucked up and move on, rather than torture yourself with something you won't enjoy.
I remember years ago I read the book Watchers by Dean Koontz, and I was curious about the movie adaptation, but my mom saw it and said they did a really bad job, and what she said about it was enough to convince me I wasn't going to like it, so I didn't bother wasting my time. I watch things to enjoy them, and if I know I'm know I'm not going to enjoy something, I just can't force myself to watch it.

The acting in the early seasons is usual Sci-fi channel level terrible and only rescued by a young McAvoy.

I had no problem with the acting in either miniseries at all.

The art direction was awful even allowing for the low budget.

That, I can agree with; the costuming and set design (IMHO) should've been more llike what was seen on Star Trek TNG, DS9, and VOY than what we got, or maybe a retro-1940's style (Art Deco for the architecture, 1940's American military style for House Atredies [that jacket which Eisenhower wore], '60's Star Trek tech and spacecraft style, a Nazi look for House Harkonnen, and an Imperial style for House Corrino). The Fremen can look the same as before.

A miniseries has more time to play with so a better fit for the type of book readers who cry about every little dull moment that gets cut like Gurneys pointless balicet or the utterly boring Tom Bombadil but the miniseries of Dune was nowhere near as good as a whole.

The mini-series was great, the costuming just wasn't up to par. The complaining about Gurney's baliset not being featured is too petty, though.

No, they didn't.

Oh yeah, while I'm at it and following from the last post, a better look for the Bene Geserit and the Guild (the BG can dress like the ladies from this religious order, while the Guild can dress like airline pilots from the 1940's and techicians like tech workers in jumpsuits [the Steersmen/Navigators can look like classically-designed deep sea divers or astronauts when they have to be in public.])

As for not having all of the good novel bits in the movie (Gurney's singing and playing of the baliset, the banquet) the blame for that should, IMHO, be laid at the feet of the movie theater chains, for not allowing longer movies to be shown at their cinemas as in the '60's and '70's (the roadshow theatrical release needs to come back.)

On the one hand I would be surprised and on the other with the Avatar sets I shouldn't be.

They're supposed to be part of the Icons line, which is what they call their adult collectables line now that they've combined them under one name. The super expensive sets. The 5 foot Eiffel tower, as an example, is part of it. Prices higher than the usual sets, not going for as much mass market appeal.

Which sucks because 5 years ago the adult premium sets actually cost less on a per brick basis than reg Lego. Then Lego saw how popular they all were and ramped up the price.
