Dune Audibooks--Anyone listened?

While scouring through iTunes for something to buy (it was my birthday and Mom gave me a gift card), I stumbled on the audiobooks of Frank Herbert's Dune series. I was surprised to see multiple cast members listed and looked up a little more info online. I found out that there's one narrator (Simon Vance, whose voice I love) but every so often other voice actors come in to do a scene.

It sounds interesting, but I'm not sure I'd like that approach. I was wondering if anyone here has listened to any of the audiobooks (particularly the first one) and could tell me in a little more detail what it's like. Does the narrator come in during those scenes to say "he said" and stuff? Or am I misreading it and the others only come in for those 'excerpts' at the beginning of chapters?

you bet... every one... three times each now, thats what 14 books now... i like audio books better then reading...
and more like seeing a movie in ur head...

besides, my boss at work use to bitch when i read a book... he just walks by when I'm just sitting at the computer terminal listening to one...

not sure of the wpm.... dune 1120 minutes long... butlerian jihad is 1480... they all range around/between those...
I'm listening to the entire honor harrington series at the moment.

There long but I got through it in a few weeks when I was driving a lot last summer. Always gave me something to look forward to when I was driving.

To answer the original question I did enjoy the book, and thought the speakers did a good job.

Simon Vance did an excellent reading -- you can tell he put a lot of effort into it. The additional cast voices were unnecessary IMO. This was one of the most highly recommended audiobooks last year on audible.co.uk. The total length of the Dune reading is 22 hours (1320 minutes).

The recordings of the sequels (by Frank Herbert, not the BH and KJA one) are also very good.

I just downloaded the first. It'll be the next one I listen to after Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban. :)

ETA: I also figured out you can listen to samples on Audible.com, so I checked them out. It's an interesting effect, this changing of voices.
