Dukat vs Macet

Kilana2

I wanted to post that thread under DS9, but refrained from doing so, because it is more related to the Litverse.

Marc Alaimo was both Macet and Dukat.

Their resemblance is due to the fact that they are cousins.

While Dukat was a prominent recurring character and one of my favorite villains. Macet turned up in just one of the TNG episodes and I almost forgot about him.

Kira was struck by their resemblance, even their similiar voice. That´s only logical, as they were both played by the same actor. Funny thing is, that in the German dubbing they had different voice actors. So this is inconsistent with Kira´s line of thinking. I liked Dukats voice actor, though. He cought Dukats smarminess convincingly.

Dukat´s fate in "What you leave behind" is well known, Macet entered the Litverse stage. :cardie:

Despite of being different from his cousin he is fascinating.

While we see more of Macet in the literature, there are still shocking things from the past related to Dukat and the Occupation.

At least in the primary universe we never saw them interacting, that would have been interesting.

Good Guy and Bad Guy, is it that easy?:) :cardie:

Weren't they at the same military get-together in Day of the Vipers? Or am I remembering wrong?

Despite having loved the Terok Nor novels I can´t remember that. Will look it up later.

There was a MU short story where they interacted. But MU Dukat

is also dead. I don´t know about MU Macet

Oh, wait, looked it up and it wasn't Day of the Vipers, it was Fearful Symmetry. The party where Iliana met Corbin for the first time.

I looked it up in MB, yes. It was a short moment, though. He also appeared in the DS9 Gateway novel Demons of air and darkness.

Macet appears to be the Picard of the Cardassians (appropriate, perhaps, given that he stood opposite him during the Phoenix incident): they'll never get him off that bridge. It's 2383 and he's still captaining Trager, patrolling the Cardassian border.

I guess people talk about promoting him or bringing him home to be more prominent, and then someone says, "Castellan, are we forgetting the....the face thing?"

It is also a method of maintaining Marc Alaimo´s presence, although in a different role.

Weyoun also keeps on "living". Only Damar is gone (in the PU).

I would say that Macet works hard at being the good guy, specifically because Dukat was so clearly the bad guy. He has actively decided to embrace the better parts of being Cardassian, like Damar and Garak did, to try to counteract his cousin. It's established that he was the one who led the attack on the Rondac III shipyards as part of Damar's resistance. It's probably even why he grew the facial hair - to distinguish himself from his cousin. Which would imply that Macet knew Dukat was an asshole all along (since he had the facial hair in "The Wounded") and not just during the war. Maybe he stays a Gul rather than a Legate because Legates too easily became corrupt in the past (the Cardassian equivalent of Badmirals).

I have to amend this: Damar went to the happy hunting ground  :cardie:

Elias Vaughn was also a Commander for a long time. He kept a low profile. People should underestimate him because of an allegedly low rank. He worked for SI, though. Maybe Macet plays also an important role.

So basically two Dukats interacting? I think it would turn into a nauseating mutual admiration society. :ack:

Huh? No, Macet's nothing at all like Dukat, that's the entire point of his character; that everyone assumes on first glance that he must be like his cousin based purely on physical appearance, and it's a constant effort on his part for him to move beyond that. He loathed Dukat's sleaze and attitude, and he hated that he looked so similar to him.

So the German premise to give Macet and Dukat different voice dubbing wasn´t quite that bad. This might be, because Macet appeared long before Dukat and once Dukat was settled in, I got used to his "voice". Point is: their voice actors don´t have similiar voices at all.
In the novels Kira wonders about the similiarity of their voices. That´s the crux with things like dubbing. I could watch the episodes in the original if I wanted to.
Regarding to the character, they are definitely different.

I wonder whether the casting of different dubbing actors was done on purpose to differentiate the two Alaimo characters a bit more, or if it was just happenstance.

I think the latter was the case.
Or Thilo Schmitz, who did the voice dubbing for Alaimo was better suitet for Dukat than Gerald Paradies who spoke Macet. Macet had only a small role. His German voice didn´t match a Cardassian IMO.

Schmitz also spoke Evek (Cardassian) and Gaila (Ferengi), though. :cardie: Paradies spoke Jem´Hadar among others.

In Voyage Home Sulu has the same German voice as ALF , a even bigger mismatch.
