To be perfectly honest:
What that DIS season 2's final battle reminds me
the most are the space battles from the rebooted Battlestar Galactica:
Think about it: Big, almost stationary capital ships firing hundreds and hundreds of rounds, dozens to hundreds small fighters maneovering inbetween them, and hundreds of explosions happening at every second on screen.
And that's also the biggest problem: BSG did it better. The battles there were much clearer structured. But that also came with the experience: That's the type of warfare the show BSG did. They learned how to structure that and give the viewer a good overview over everything that's happening at once. Wheras for a Star Trek battle, it looked a little out of place, as if they were dipping their toes into a completely different show, with different combat rules and technology.
Basically - this looked like a battle fought with shells, with thousands of ronds of ammunition going off at once. For a Star Trek battle it would make much more sense to see less
explosions, and instead way more
energy discharges - from energy weapons, phasers, photon torpedoes, shields being hit and so on.
