DSC Pros and Cons Game

Vger23

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Since everyone eventually loves to come down on only one side of an argument...I propose a game of Pro's and Con's.

Rules:

  • Each individual post only contains ONE "pro" and ONE "con"
  • You must post one of each
  • You cannot post another pair until someone else posts.
  • You cannot post a tongue-in-cheek or sarcastic excuse for a pro or con just to try and be funny. Example:
PRO: It was teh awesome
CON: Should have been 30 episodes!!!1!1!!!1! Har Har Har!!!!1!
  • You cannot post a very weak Pro or Con coupled with a very strong opposite to try and prove how witty you are Example:
PRO: I like the chairs they used on the Discovery bridge, I guess.
CON: The existence of the series!!! HAR HAR HAR!!!1!!1!

Let the games begin!

I'll start:

PRO: Production design in general is my second favorite in the franchise (TOS movies are 1st)
CON: Culber's character exited far too early

Pro: Anthony Rapp's performance was amazing, i love how he cycled through the stern scientist pressed into military service, to learn to like and respect his colleagues, to the personality changes caused by the spore drive.

Con: i do wish there had been more planetside missions and they spent less time on Discovery.

Amazingly enough (NO JOKE), I actually considered starting with these exact same two....!

Pro: Michael Burnham strikes me as a beautifully complex character who already has development in one season far beyond that of many of my favorite long-running Trek characters.

Con: I feel that the show is sometimes edited to move at a clip that doesn't do justice to the overall story, and could use more of the slow burn of a Game of Thrones or Westworld.

Pro: Lorca made a great Anti-Hero. One of maybe a handful of characters that's ever pissed me off, not because of the writing but because of their actions. That's the good kind of pissed off.

Con: The way he died. Maybe Section 31 beamed him out before he could be disintegrated. It happened in DS9's "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" with Sloan. But I'm not holding my breath and it would feel too much like a case of "Two wrongs don't make a right."

Pro: Doug Jones kills it as Saru.

Con: I honestly do wish Lorca had been a flawed Captain with PTSD as opposed to being EEEEEEEVIL from the mirror universe. I think it would have been a more interesting "prestige tv" choice. I liked what we got well enough, but I would have liked it better the other way.

PRO: Spore Drive is a unique and very creative "core" technology, the first Trek has really brought to the table since its inception
CON: Spore Drive probably could have been "explained" a little better...although it's not like any early episode of TOS did anything to explain Warp Drive either...

Pro: Jason Isaacs was tremendous -- one of the most compelling performances in Trek history.
Con: The freeing of the Tardigrade was a rote Trek trope that didn't make a lot of sense in the context of the story.

Pro: Burnham won't take shit from anyone.

Con: Saru reminds me of Dr. Bellows from I Dream of Jeannie sometimes. Questioning, unsure, and wondering what's going on.

Pro: Lorca became a very compelling and relatable character by the middle of the season, and he benefitted greatly from a strong performance by Issacs.

Con: All of that got flushed out the airlock by the Mirror Universe twist.

Pro: the Klingons actually spoke in Klingon when there were no humans around instead of English
Con: the delivery of the Klingon dialogue

Pro: Mirror Georgiou in command of Discovery brought a lot of dark humor.

Con: "Stayin' Alive" is one of my least favorite disco songs. Not that it's a bad song. But I guess "Stayin' Alive" makes sense since they're not dead.
