DS9 on blu ray?

If you look in the comments the poster mentions that the original versions were done in Lightwave and Aftereffects. It has been leaked that one of the companies,Digital Muse, the artists all kept their own copies of the files (http://trekcore.com/blog/2013/05/deep-space-nine-in-high-definition-one-step-closer/), and that they had purposefully over built them (besides HD, I guess they were also thinking at that time that if a future theatrical film needed one of the ships, by overbuilding, the ships would be ready for theatrical resolution). Plus the CGI model of both DS9 and Voyager are still in use for the Ships Of The Line calendars (actually, it was the CGI artists on Voyager who launched the idea for the calendars, because of all the work and detail that they had put into the Utopia Planetia yards for the opening of the Voyager episode Realativity, and how they hated the fact that people were only going to see blurry, low resolution shots of the orbital facility).

Just to add that the approach they were taking back then also meant overbuilding for things like close ups and pull back shots from Windows etc. Was the final shot of DS9 full cgi or mixed?

SpaceHD uses the original SD broadcast version of DS9 there is no up converting. The source appears to be the original broadcast tapes because when they go to commercial the DS9 title card will pop up with the old startrek.msn.com web address on it.
Last time that I saw SPACE, they aired everything at 1080i, and then their SD channel was just a sub of the HD feed, so even 4:3 stuff was presented within a 16:9 matte that had black on all 4 sides in SD. So I would suspect that SPACE is probably upconverting DS9 and Voyager to 1080i (from either 3/4 U-Matic or Betacam SP copies), and then their SD feed just has the shows in a 16:9 matte (otherwise their HD feed would have the SD show in a small square right in the middle of the screen, rather than filling the middle of the screen with pillarboxes on either side).

BBC America HD takes the SD TNG episodes (seasons 3-7) and blows them up to 14:9. Looks terrible.

I just bought the 50th anniversary blu ray trek collection @ best buy. https://www.amazon.com/Star-Anniver...-1&keywords=star+trek+50th+blu+ray+collection

($208 on amazon, got it for $130 with a free gift card.) If they did a release similar to this for DS9/VOY I would have no problem paying more per show. It's neat. Each part of the collection has it's own packaging, and each disc has an iconic image printed on the cover from one of the episodes on the disc. For example, Disc 1 in the set shows a creepy silhouette of Gary MItchell. I am really glad I made this purchase, but I was suprised at all the negative reviews on Amazon. A lot of people are upset because it's basically a repackage of everything relased thus far (except the TOS Blu Animated series), but for someone like me who never watched/owned TOS on bluray, it was a great deal.

Hopefully increased sales from all the 50th anniversary Trek merch (although I haven't actually looked at any sales numbers so please feel free to correct) and the launch of Discovery in the winter will be the little push we need to get a similar collection of DS9 and VOY on blu ray. And these last few posts involving the original assets are getting me more and more excited for an eventual release!

14:9?

I can understand cropping to 16:9, even if I personally hate it.

But 14:9? What's even the point if you're not getting rid of the black bars?

I'm assuming the DVDs of DS9/VOY were sourced from the original broadcast tapes?

Were the tape masters taken from the interpositive or the original camera negative?

I wish to be a superhipermillionaire and give the world a complete remastering on BRD of DS9 and VOY. It would be my legacy to the trekkers world. Yeah, I'm just dreaming.

As much as I love Trek, if I had $40 million to burn, I'd likely be using it to feed the homeless and sending poor kids to school. I wouldn't feed the CBS profit machine, any more than I already have.

Well... if I was a super-hiper-ultra millionaire, I would do other things too. Obviously.

But Trek teach us that the seek of profits is below the seek of the commonwell. Yeah, I would do. Bring happiness no matter what is not a bad thing, and stop thinking selfishly would do a better society, that's about Star Trek, doesn't?

Well, I think Bill's point is that there are other things less selfish one could do than remaster a TV show, as much as one might welcome it.

I don't think even a super-hyper-millionaire could buy world peace.
So you might as well go with the bluray treatment for DS9.
