DS9 had the shittiest excuse for

DVD packaging I've ever seen in my life. It looks really good when I see it on the internet but I just opened up my box set of the series and yanked out the first season and... Damn! A slipcover for a slipcover? WTF? Good thing the series is so good. How long should I expect the package to hold together before it falls apart? It's pretty damned flimsy.

Some of mine have already started to break apart. Sure, the plastic looks neat, but it's really flimsy at the seams. Oddly enough, the worst one was the newest, S7. S1's held up rather well.

Those original DS9 boxsets were awesome, despite being over £80 each. Such a shame they stopped making them, they looked great, they were good quality and it beats the other boxset designs that came out afterwards.

Yup :D

Amazon.co.uk still seem to have some Region 2 box sets in stock "brand new", though not from every season. I thought they'd stopped making them. The only seem to have the Slimline ones of the other series and they're much cheaper.

The original R2 boxsets were great quality, but they weren't all that practical and they were very expensive. I still prefer them to the slimline releases though because they're the sort of set I can proudly display on the shelf rather than tucking them away in the press.

I'd prefer slimline cases--indeed, almost anything--to the shitty plastic packaging that we have in region one. At least three, perhaps four of the seasons my family owns have both plastic flaps broken off. Even the dodgy packaging for the Star Trek: Voyager sets was an improvement.

If your cases are falling apart, you should download the covers at RixGrafix.com, get some cases and make your own. The covers are pretty nice. I did this for my Babylon 5 dvds.

I got my Deep Space 9 dvds when they first came out (region 1) and they are still holding up great.

I take it you didn't buy these?

To answer your question...NO.
I'm in the USA (region 1). All of my DS9 season packs tore up so bad that I had to go to amazon.com last year and order the complete series (all 7 seasons) to get new ones.
Here's what I ordered--->
But those that tore up I'd had about 5 or 6 years...since 3 or 4 years before my half-brother died in 2004. I admit the packaging is pretty crappy. My season 4 pack already has a rip that is somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 of the way across the front of the inside cover where the discs are. If I don't slide it in just right, it catches on the outside cover. However, the show is still as good as ever. Each episode is still as good (or bad) as the first time I saw it back when they were still making new episodes. I thought each of the 3 seasons of Mutant X had crappy holders. HA!!! They got nothing on DS9 when it comes to crappy holders.

I have these as well! :)

When I saw they'd changed the packaging to flimsy looking cardboard, I was soooo happy we'd bought all of our Star Trek DVDs in the days when they were all plastic (like the one shown above) - even if they were super expensive at the time. :p

I got S1 on that all though some of the discs are broken or missing. They were WAY to expensive for my young ass to buy has a series collection. Season 2 to 7 is basically like this.

I like it. Looks

I'm in the same position as Carolyn, ordered the set last year and got these flimsy sets. They're awful, and while they've not fallen apart yet can feel they're going to at any minute.

The VOY ones aren't great either, but they don't feel as insubstantial.

The top of my season one case is already showing some wear after one frickin' day. I guess I'm gonna have to scotch tape the fucker. Man I wish this thing were in a friggin' lunchbox like my Star Trek DVD's are. I've had those for years and they're fine. Shit I'd even settle for those ugly accordian boxes TNG come in. The DS9 ones are pretty (not in the same league as the UK boxes unfortunately) but also pretty shitty. ;)

I did the same thing, for both TNG and DS9. I like the newer designs better than the ones I have, but I didn't have my box sets long before I was looking for an alternative. I'm a collector (or packrat, if you want the truth;)) so I put the original boxes in storage and put my discs in cases with RixGrafix covers. I haven't regretted it once.

I agree. I'm not sure what the difference is, but I never felt the need to replace the Voyager cases. The TNG boxes were just extremely inconvenient, and I worried about the glue and the cardboard pulling apart. The DS9 cases felt as though after a couple bends the plastic would begin to split. But the Voyager cases are reasonably easy to get discs in and out of, and don't feel like they'll wear out as easily.
