DS9 Fans: What do you wish DS9 had that other Trek shows possessed?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
ok, so i've been on these boards for quite a while now and i read them daily. one thing i've noticed is the fans in the DS9 forum are much more passionate about DS9 and are much less forgiving of the other Trek shows. i've never seen someone so energetic about defending Enterprise or Voyager or even TNG.

no other group of fans is so critical of what i see as minor quibbles of the other treks. i can't say how many times i've seen people on here talk about the mistake of casting a female captain, or how enterprise isn't a real 'trek', or how the klingons were too timid in TNG, or the 'ugliness' of 7of9. it's senseless. why are DS9 fans so ardent about protecting the show? i don't hate the show btw, in fact, i'm becoming more of a fan every time i watch.

anyway, it got me thinking: what do fans on here feel DS9 was missing that complimented the other trek's so well?

Re: DS9 Fans: What do you wish DS9 had that other Trek shows possessed

I don't know that there's anything I'd add to DS9 because it might well feel artificial and out-of-place. If I want a Trek with more of a sense of 'adventuring the unknown' I can turn to any of the other four series.

DS9 is likely the most unique of them all and I don't think I'd change that.

Re: DS9 Fans: What do you wish DS9 had that other Trek shows possessed

DS9 lacks more open mined fans that are willing to give the show a chance. I always thought it was narrow minded to dismiss DS9 for not featuring a setting aboard an Enterprise as if that somehow would guarantee quality, well it doesn't (see star trek enterprise). I've also seen "fans" refuse to watch the show and judge it without even seeing it or accuse the show of "not being star trek" or being "what star trek isn't about" so just what is star trek supposed to be? I always defined it as an exploration of humanity and DS9 did an exemplary job of this you have a ton of episodes that feature great science fiction, awesome character pieces, your exploration of humanity, and it makes you think and feel! I find the other series even the much beloved TOS (even by me) and TNG (overrated imo) don't have episodes that do this as often.

I'm an ardent DS9 fan, and I can say.... It wasn't a mistake to cast a female captain on VOY (the mistake was the way in which the character was used). I personally found the Klingons of TNG too be just right. I also found 7 of 9 to be very attractive. And I even love ENT.

That all being said, the only thing I'd add to DS9 would be....

more scantily-clad women. :techman:

Who are all these people you are talking about? I've always found DS9 to be the most respected Trek show, even if someone might love one of the others more.

I've also NEVER heard/read anyone say that it wasn't Star Trek just because it was set on a space station and not a starship. I hear people talking about this criticism but I've never seen anyone employing it. I'm thinking it's some accepted meme that everyone just nods along to.

I've definitely encountered it. Had a bit of an argument in the comments on io9 the other day about it, actually. I've also had Trek-fan friends express a similar attitude. We rarely get it on the BBS, but out amongst the "general public" it most certainly exists.

Oh. Wow. Then again I guess most Trek fans I meet in public in Aus haven't seen anything but some TNG which they usually enthuse to me about if they see me reading a Trek book. Heh, I guess the "general public" in my mind IS the TrekBBS and before that a mailing list I was on years ago where DS9 was revered.

Re: DS9 Fans: What do you wish DS9 had that other Trek shows possessed

i've never seen anyone mention DS9 not being a true trek?

Re: DS9 Fans: What do you wish DS9 had that other Trek shows possessed

There is nothing that the other Trek series possessed that Deep Space Nine needed to be better. Except, maybe, The Borg (for longer than their brief appearance in Emissary).

Re: DS9 Fans: What do you wish DS9 had that other Trek shows possessed

Though I love the Borg I was Borg saturated with VOY and as they ran concurrently for some time I think it would not have been good to have the Borg in DS9.

Also it would have taken away from the fabulous development of the Cardassians and the Dominion!

Mostly I end up wishing other series possesed things that DS9 had in abundance. I can't think of anything the other series had.. well maybe better music. TOS and ENT both had markedly more distinct and evocative background music.

Re: DS9 Fans: What do you wish DS9 had that other Trek shows possessed

I suppose that's true. But on a fanboyish level, I wish the series could have made some mention of the Defiant's appearance at the start of First Contact, or included it as a story point or something.

Re: DS9 Fans: What do you wish DS9 had that other Trek shows possessed

While there are many elements that I love from the other shows (The Borg, Q, Scott Bakula...) I'm glad that DS9 set its own path and made no or limited use of them. The only thing I think that DS9 could have used more of is the Romulans, because I love those sneaky bastards. It's a pity that the Romulan from The Search didn't become a recurring character because a regular Romulan voice would have been very welcome during the political upheaval that followed.

wow, you're the first person i've seen on here to compliment bakula as captain.

Re: DS9 Fans: What do you wish DS9 had that other Trek shows possessed

I'm thinking more about his numerous guest appearances on Babylon 5.

it seems like the VOY folk have given up defending themselves and now just avoid the DS9 trolls that waltz into the forum

Oh, really, now. You're seriously going to tell me you buy into Anwar's "NINER HATERS!!!!" garbage? Having a criticism and also happening to prefer DS9 does not make one a troll. And in either case, they sure as hell haven't "given up" anything. But seriously, if anything, TNG and DS9 are the only two Treks that seem to NOT have insane militant defenders. I haven't observed at all what you mentioned in your opening post.

EDIT: And just so this doesn't get misconstrued, I'm not calling anyone who likes a show or defends it at ALL an "insane militant defender". That's a very specific type of "debate" and attempted rebuttal of criticism.

Could it be because they have less attackers?

VOY and then ENT have been the objects of disdain and ridicule for a long time. Even now in ranking lists of shows people make a point of saying ENT doesn't count enough to rank.
