Dragonball raped at the box office

When will that be hitting the US, dubbed, in Blu-Ray?
On the subject of Dragonball Kai, it's really nothing to get excited about. I've seen the first couple episodes and essentially it's a rerun of Dragonball Z. The opening and ending may look nice and shiny new but the in-show animation is still old with the same sub par 80s Toei Animation, it's not updated and tells the same story as Z. If you want to see Dragonball Z remastered with better sound and forced into widescreen, it's already available here on DVD from Funimation on the current season sets. I couldn't really justify continuing to watch it personally, but give it a shot if you want.

Well, I think the appeal of Kai is going to be the removal of the filler that accumulated in the show. These first few episodes won't be much different because the show was still very tight. But, I wouldn't be surprised if the episodes with Vegeta and Nappa will be much more succinct. Though, maybe not.

The real difference will definitely shine when it comes to the the Frieza fight. I imagine it'll be like night and day.

Oh come on - it's NOT DBZ unless you have 22 minutes of dialog like:

Vegeta: "I'm going to have to power up and use my super-sayian ultra attack..."

Goku: "Oh no, he's powering up and using his super-sayian ultra attack..."

Announcer: "Can Goku counter Vegeta's super-sayian ultra attack?"

Vegeta: "I'm almost there, no one can counter my super-sayian ultra attack..."

Goku: "Oh no, he's almost ready! I don't know if I can handle his super-sayian ultra attack..."

Announcer: "Next time on Dragon Ball Z CAN Goku counter Vegeta's super-sayian ultra attack?"

:guffaw:

All 200+ episodes seem to follow the above rule, you could skip a week and not really miss a thing.

There is no filler in the Frieza fight; it's a direct adaption of the Manga. The Manga fight was essentially fight and more fight without any dialogue. No dialogue, equals no reading, equals that looking past the pictures went past rather fast - in fact, it would take about 5 minutes, exactly the time that was said that Namek had left.

Translate it into animation; and animation that makes enough sense our mortal eyes can follow the stuff; and you get something that takes much longer.

Of course, this was the last, ultimate final battle. This was the end of Dragon Ball. Frieza is killed, Namek explodes in Goku's face, Goku dies - the end.

As the final ultimate battle; this would be epic. But the fans and the studios didn't want Dragon Ball to end, so more was made.

Complete bullshit.

That doesn't mean it's not filler in the show. It's mostly dead air and amounts to a non-event the way it was originally. If the people working on Kai have even half a clue they'll shorten the Frieza fight considerably.

It's interesting to note about Kai that Goku is already dead by episode 3, whereas it took 5 episodes in Z (4 for the dubbed/edited version).

Amen, and even if you missed it, about 5 minutes of actual show time was dedicated to explain what went on in the previous episode to fill more time instead of new content. I really dislike when shows assume you're so dense that you can't remember what happened just a week ago on a show you're following.

Indeed. These sequences became more common than : 'Rex, Speed's older brother who left home, years before...'

I can understand if they do the "last time on ...." recaps for season opening episodes, if it takes a long time between seasons, but anime doesn't usually take season breaks. It airs consequetively on a weekly basis, barring holidays and broadcast preemptions, until it's done.

Be glad it wasn't Bleach - it takes a FULL ONE THIRD of the episode before new content finally shows up.

Exactly what I was thinking. A minute in Dragon Ball is three weeks. :wtf:

Not a big fan of the series but my brother was. And I can tell from their promo poster alone the movie sucks. And rape doesn't even begin to describe it.
