Dragonball raped at the box office

If the whole show was exactly like this, I would totally watch it. Fucking hilarious.

If you like that you should check out the various "abridged series" episodes on Youtube those are way better, although I don't know if anyone's done DB or DBZ yet. I've seen them for other series though. They make even horrible series like Yugi Oh and Gantz hilarious. On the other hand both are probabally immensely more humorous if you've seen the anime first though so you know what exactly they're tearing into.

Dragonball to me always seemed to be a mix of the Monkey King (Chinese legend) and the Superman mythos (a superstrong, purehearted alien hero from a destroyed planet who has made Earth-or whatever planet DBZ is set on-his adopted home)

As for the bad animation, Dragonball Z was actually made in the late 80s and early to mid-90s, and by one of the cheaper Japanese animation studios (Toei). Also it's initial dub/translation was perhaps the worst ever (The problem wasn't necesarilly the voice actors, but the terrible translated scripts-characters did not die, they were simply 'sent to another dimension') So it's not really fair to judge modern anime on it.

Whether anime aficionados like to admit it or not, I don't think any other anime has gained as much recent mainstream success in the US as DBZ

"Pokemon" I think has exceeded it in popularity. And "Speed Racer" got at least the movie. Plus the Miyazaki films & Akira have at least gotten critical recognition.

There have been several anime series that have failed over here, though. "Gundam"-which is super popular in Japan-started off well with 1995's Gundam Wing but failed to attract a major American following, although it appears they're trying again with Gundam 00.

rape 1 (rāp)

  3. Abusive or improper treatment; violation: a rape of justice.
tr.v. raped, rap·ing, rapes
  1. To force (another person) to submit to sex acts, especially sexual intercourse; commit rape on.
  2. To seize and carry off by force.
  3. To plunder or pillage.

Don't try to monopolize one definition of a word. There are multiple definitions, so getting upset when a person is obviously using another accepted definition dumbs down the English language, limits free speech, and makes people stupidier because they're no long aware of the other definitions. It reminds me of all the people who get uptight about the word "niggardly." Look it up before you make a fuss about what you don't know you're talking about.

Would saying "Dragonball killed at the box office" be better? Certainly people have known others that have been killed, and being killed can be (argued reasonably to be) worse than being raped.

My point is that the impact of words and language tend to fluctuate over time, and there's not much society can do about it except go with the flow. Just look at all the offensive words thrown around nonchalantly by today's rap lyricists.

Learn to listen/read the context of what another person is saying, instead of being distracted by a single word. Everyone's life will be less stressful that way.

(edit: sorry, I'm just tired of people policing my language :))

I didn't know that I was. You expressed your opinion, and I expressed mine. An appeal not to use a word or use it a certain way carries less weight than the tag on your pillow.

Nah, well, in America maybe. But America had an exceedingly crappy dub, and well Americans are dumb. ;)

In the rest of the world though, Dragon Ball stands so far above Pokemon it isn't even funny. There everyone knows Pokemon is a weak ass commercial for Pokemon merchandise made for little kids 7-8 and is pathetically weak, while Dragon Ball for 10 and up is simply fantastic.

Speed Racer was popular in the 70s. Pokemon, true, but I still don't understand the fascination with that show.

I tried watching Gundam, but it was waaaay too confusing to try to follow imo.

Pokemon is definitely a crappy kids show in America, too. The only reason it might be more well known is because of the video games and card games associated with it.

Honestly, I'd say Inuyasha is probably the most popular "grown up" anime show in America.

More well-known does not equal popular. Popular actually requires people watching it, and like to do so.

Anyway; Dragon Ball Z is re-released in Japan as Dragon Ball Kai; 720p widescreen blow up, with brand new true 720p animated opening credits, ending credits, commercial cut animations, and digitally remastered soun. Just to illustrate just how popular Dragon Ball is. I have a high doubt we'll ever be seeing Pokemon given that treatment anywhere.

When will that be hitting the US, dubbed, in Blu-Ray?

That was exactly the point I was trying to make.

It may take a while. No word as to if its even been licensed yet, and as of right now only a few animes have been released in the US on blu-ray. Mostly movies or relatively short series. Kai is going to be about 100 episodes long, so i'd say expect a wait.

If you want to call Americans dumb...don't do it by the standard of how much they admire goddamned Dragonball Z.

I've heard Toriyama (DB's creator as well as a major factor in the design of CHRONO TRIGGER) personally hated the film.

Funny thing is this is also like the twentieth Dragonball theatrical release. There's been tons and tons of anime Dragonball Z films-most of them impossible to reconcile with the series continuity.

But you can largely regard those as done for fun, telling tales in a slightly alternate continuity, and exploring legit canon questions like : Did F-Trunks ever return for a visit? and What happened when 18 demanded her money from Mr. Satan for throwing that tournament? Broly broke nearly all the rules for SSJ, but they were wild adventures. I still left not hating DB 09 outright, but wishing that they could have done a lot more with it--and they could have.

Hardly, who do you think invented the machine you used to make that comment Eh? The machine used to put together the clothes you wear? The light bulbs that give you light? Yeah, Americans.

Plus the company you're referring to, 4Kids, is reviled as the absolute worst anime distributor anyway for the hack job it gives it's series.

Zakkrusz, you cannot win a debate with that one. You'd have an easier time stopping Goku from eating, a tsundere from not punching out her guy, making Shinji yell 'Cut the shit' and mean it, or making Lucy give Kouta away at his wedding.

Nope, not at all. The machine used to make this comment as well as the network that allows for comments would be CERN, in Switzerland - but mostly Europe working together.

The machine used to put together clothes has been around for over a century and was invented in Britain.

Lightbulbs would be that guy, you know, the company that is most famous for building the things and selling them, oh yeah, Phillips, aka a Dutchman.

Seriously man, there's this little smiley up there ;), a wink, you would know what a wink means don't you? But if you feel the need to disprove a jest at least be sure to use correct examples, or else you kind of end up proving the jest.

No, 4Kids is not the company I'm referring to, as they did not do the Dragon Ball dub. The company that did and does the Dragon Ball dub, would be Funimation. And would actually be one of the better dub companies; and why is it better? Because fans of Dragon Ball brown beat them into submission with more and more critique so that they finally realized they were screwing up, and bettered themselves. Hence why the redub of DBZ has the Japanese music as part of the main 5.1 audio track, and not the horrifying hurting your ears dub track from their first attempt.

Computers and internet? I guess Babbage and Tim Berners-Lee 'don't count' then (or LEO, come to that).
Light bulbs? First patented by Joseph Swan a year before Edison, with the legal battle between them settled by them entering into a partnership that started producing bulbs about three miles from me, in Chelmsford, Essex, UK (I think the factory was still working when I was a kid, almost 100 years later). And another mile away is the Marconi factory from where the world's first radio station broadcast, but I'm not going to claim Britain 'owns' radio!
I know 3D Master's comment wound you up, but how does (not entirely inaccurate) boasting about some of your compatriots achievements answer it? Every country has a mix of a few geniuses and a lot of idiots.

I never said anything about the Dragonball dub. Pokemon is the show that's been hacked up by 4Kids Anyhow the company you're referring to with the crappy Dragonball Z dub was Saban who contracted out Ocean Group which is responsisible for that "another dimension" travesty, but they only had the first two seasons. Funimation is the second company. They bought seasons 3 and onwards and dubbed them more faithfully, then they went back and bought the first couple season when Saban's license expired and redubed them better as well. So blame Canada for that one, I think that's where they're based.

Also I realize it's a mater of music taste but eww I really do not like the original music for DBZ at all. A lot of it is really discordant. Funimation's electronica produced by Bruce Falconer was preferable if not ideal.

You have just answered your own question. It doesn't and that's precisely the point of my apparently blundered attempt. Although, I admit to history not being my forte to any of the information is wrong than it is and I don't particularly care to debate it. Maybe I should have just linked to this instead. Also, I thought the laughing emoticon would give you the correct intended notion that I was laughing it off. But now that that little disaster of of conversation is over on to more Dragonball movie bashing or in my case mostly apathy.
