Dragonball raped at the box office

 Yes, Indeed.

I've heard of it but I've no idea what its about. Is it like some poor mans Pokemon?
Saw the trailer, still no idea what its about. Looks shite too

Although it has James Marsters in it as the bad guy I believe, so there's that

No, it's slighly better. It's a superpowered martial-arts show.

I wouldn't say it sucked exactly, it was entertaining enough and a lot better than I thought it was going to be.

Nah, Heroes is a poor man's Dragon Ball. That is; the original Manga/Anime. This piece of shite movie that doesn't look like Dragon Ball at all, is best forgotten.

Hmm does the average American know what Dragonball even is?

No. However, I'd say most didn't know who Iron Man was either. It comes down to who is involved in the project and how faithful they are to what made it popular. I don't know jack squat about Dragonball and expected that like comic movies there would be a small contingent that would hate it no matter the quality. However, when 9 of 10 peoples comments I read about the net say how sucky it was and they admit to being fans it tells me that the talent involved both in front and behind the camera worked from a less than faithful script. Lose, lose all the way around.
I like Emmy Rossum and James Marsters and if this had even gotten some type of B-/C grade from most fans I was going to pony up and see it, not now. Netflix queue is the where I'll see it.

Dragonball: Evolution made approximately $4.6m in its opening three days at the US box office.

<shrugs>

Lame show. Lame fans. Lame movie. It all fits the theme. Anyone who thought anything like that would do well is pretty daft.

Here in the states animation to live action doesn't have a good track record in other places like Japan it's better and more frequent. Sometimes done a lot better, but not always. Basically, it's a roll of the dice with lots of factors to consider.

Speaking of Japan I hear that that DBE was extremely well received there. So for a film of this nature I think international sales figures have to be considered before calling it a flop too.

I don't think the movie was properly marketed.
I never saw a trailer or a commercial for it...
Neither did I.

Hmm does the average American know what Dragonball even is?
I would guess so, since the cartoon and the toys enjoyed massive mainstream popularity just a few years ago.
That's what I am surprised with. This movie got web coverage on comingsoon.net since the very beginning. But I never saw any TV spot or big trailer for it.

The box office total is $25,315,346 estimated worldwide so far, which is a combination of it's release in the Asian markets last month and then it's opening weekend here in the North American market.

Nor did I! Was this new movie a cartoon or live action???

Live action.

Dragonball Evolution tries to compress the plot of Dragonball and make it more realistic, in all the wrong ways.

Dragonball is essentially a reimagining of Journey to the West, set in the near future, with improbable technology the titular magical McGuffins, and a great many naming puns.

It's ultimately the story of a brash and impulsive young boy's journey into adulthood,as he meets friends, has adventures, and learns patience and humility over the course of many years. Along the way, he fights many powerful enemies.

Then there is a timejump and a retcon involving aliens and everything gets really insane.

For the movie, they compressed about 51 hours worth of plot into 84 minutes. 51 hours into 84 minutes. They had to dump a a great many characters, and practically all fo the backstory, and plot, and character development, to acomplish this.

It also glosses over a lot of stuff that would leave a casual viewer scratching their head, like capsule cars.

The result is alright for a mindless kids action movie, but it lacks depth. Also, Roshi was miscast, miswriten, and misdirected.
