Dragon Age - Discussion Thread

Blegh, I wish there was a way to change your characters' appearance in the game. I'm completely satisfied with the facial structure and all that for the guy I just made, but once I got into the game itself his coloring looks horrible. It was a lot easier to redo characters in DAO and DA2 because you could memorize or write down the sliders, but the new character creation they use isn't nearly that simple.

From some of the discussions going around the net, the mirror from DA2's Emporium would have been a popular option to have. A few people have said they've restarted the game a few times to redo the appearance.

So Amazon didn't deliver today again (got the shipping notice on Tuesday) and i went and bought it in a store.

Installed it on the PS4 and apparently skipped the character creator by accident after i entered the character name

So i watched the first cut scene with the stock character and i couldn't stop the scene so i had to restart the game and then the game suddenly presented me with the female version of the character ( i didn't even notice how and where you change the gender).

Third attempt i finally got to design my character and import the custom world state i generated via The Keep (worked flawlessly.. at least i think so since i didn't receive any error message)

After about 3 -4 hours of playing the game i can say not bad. Combat is still a little chaotic and so far i didn't feel the need to manually control my party. Only ran into one rift where my party is currently too weak to engage the demons there.

However i get the sense that the game will be huge.. there's a shit ton of options and gameplay elements like the strategy table where you get to control the Inquisition forces, i discovered some kind of Inqusition perks (whatever that will mean in the long run) and crafting seems to be ridiculously varied.

So far my two hand weapons human warrior is at level 4 and i'm just running around the first area to see what i stumble upon and have just established the first two camps and discovered some curious things here and there that will probably be important later in the game (such as shards).

Graphics wise i can honestly say that i am a little disappointed.. i kinda expected more after i've seen screenshots and videos but maybe i'm expecting too much. It looks very good but i still don't get the feeling that it's truly next gen (fires look especially bad and unrealistic). Maybe there will come a moment where it clicks for me.

However it seems to be a good game that will take quite a while to play through without completing every villagers sidequest and discovering every little rock. Looking forward to it.

*Raises hand*

I already posted my first attempt above, so here's my second, third and final attempt.

I know they've said that made the CC lighting rig to be the same as in cutscenes, but as you can see, in context there's enough of a difference to make repeated restarts a necessity if you're a fussy bugger like me. ;)

Xenon's mirror would be a welcome (and I assume fairly simple?) addition, especially give how big this game is and how long you're going to be stuck with your derpy face. :p

It really does seem kind of odd for them not to include some sort of means to change your face in-game after providing the Black Emporium mirror in DA2. BioWare should know by now how fussy we are about our characters' faces. :p

I don't have any screenshots in my folder. I guess DAI doesn't take any automatically like DAO did at times. I'll have to take a couple of shots next time I play.

I managed to get it running on my laptop.

It takes a while to load and I haven't tried pushing the graphic settings up yet (AMD Quad A8-4500 running at up to 2.8, AMD HD7640 with 512mb and 8gb of memory).

My first character didn't come out too badly (Elf Rogue) but because of one of the graphics settings has seriously shiny hair (enough to not need a torch) that seems to go between reddish and brown depending on the lighting. Picked the Alix Winton Regan for that one.

I've also tried the creator for other characters but haven't started a game for them yet. In my opinion, the qunari definitely need mods. I did notice on the dwarf that I had facial hair options for both sexes though.

Here's my herald, BTW. Was finally able to make one I was satisfied with the other day.

I'm an idiot. I got super stuck on the Red Jenny quest because I couldn't figure out how to get to the upper market in Val Royeaux. You just had to use the Fast Travel doors, which for some reason I was convinced would just send me to the world map.

So now I finally have Sera, who is hilarious.

Im about 14 hours in and much more familiar with the controls and options though i still have areas and encounters i can' t win yet (my party is around level 6-7).

I played an area called The Fallow Mire (the one where it's night and tons of undead appear if you wade trough water). Somewhere down't the map and the left is one of the rifts that's protected by deamons including those pesky suckers that can one shot you with their ice ray (for lack of a better description).

Even one of these is hard to kill but when you do manage the next round goes off two more appear and a Revenant knight who will make short work in close combat out of you.

There were other encounters like these which sometimes is very frustrating because they are unbeatable until you have leveled up significantly. I even encountered an area in the Hinterlands (the friggin' start area) where a Dragon flies around.

I go "Cool.. let's kill some of those small drakes" and while i fight those the dragon dive bombs me and flames everyone to death

Apparently you have to accept the fact that you won't be able to complete every quest in one run and may return later when you are more powerful.

Currently i am at the shore looking for some Grey Wardens (that took me back to Dragon Age Origins immediately ;)).

14 hours in and i have barely scratched the surface.. the game is HUGE! :techman:

Here's basically how I leveled:

-Did everything in Haven
-Did everything in Hinterlands except the dragon (was able to kill the dragonlings before it) and the two level 12 rifts in the SW corner of the map
-Did everything I could at the oasis, shards permitting
-Did everything in the mire, and was leveled enough by that point that that rift was no problem
-Did everything on the Storm Coast, save the red lyrium icons in the NW part of the map which are behind an unopenable door at this point.
-THEN I finally went to Val Royeaux. My RPG philosophy is to do everything possible before advancing the main plot further. :D

I'm level 12 at this point, those two remaining Hinterlands rifts were no problem now, but the dragon still kicked my ass. May try again with Iron Bull as tank, or wait til I'm 15 or so.

Finally managed to take out the Hinterlands dragon at level 13. Cassandra's an amazing tank, generates guard like crazy. Bull was fairly squishy, but you get a whole lot of approval from him for killing it.

Damn this game is one hell of a time sink, and in a really good and possibly unhealthy way!

So much I'd like to discuss, but even this early on (just got to Skyhold) it's all so spoilery, I wouldn't want to ruin it for anyone.

Perhaps we should create a second spoiler thread for those that have completed the game. Might take a while though, this game is huuuuge!

BTW, anyone tried the multiplayer yet? I honestly haven't been able to tear myself away from SP long enough to have the time.

^That's why there's a spoiler tag on this board.

So who have people sided with in terms of the Templars or the Mages? I went with the Mages as all my previous characters and this one have been pro-Mage freedom. Things really kicked off after 15 hours of doing mostly side quests.

I enjoyed what happened in this part. Getting thrown into the future and seeing how messed up things got...and it was pretty messed up. I'll be interested to see how picking the templars changes things or if its just the same guy in a different castle given that he used time travel to get to the Mages before my Herald could.

On the bad guy, it was nice that he wasn't just evil for evil's sake. That he had a very human reason for selling his soul.

I then pissed just about everyone off by giving the Mages their freedom by making them allies.

One thing I really wish they did was if they made the bards interactable, like in Skyrim.

^I went with the mages as well.

I conscripted the mages because my Inquisitor is a devout andrastian who isn't crazy about Mage freedom. Besides, those bastards sold out to Tevinter so they lost any sympathy I had for their plight.

One thing I like is that it seems like your character's background is referenced much more in Inquisition than previous BioWare games. Companions and even random npcs are constantly working into conversation that my human warrior is a noble. I think there was a quest in Orlais where she was called "Lady Travelyan" as often as "Inquisitor."

I'll probably take both paths in two separate playthroughs, as there are likely multiple achievements on the Xbox if you take different paths like in earlier versions.

And I am an achievement whore. :D

Welp, did the best I could. Problem is he furrows his brow like crazy in-game. Lighten up, dude! You're Sarcastic Hawke, dammit!

^ On customising your Hawke, there's a annoying bug associated with it. If your character is using the non-default voice option when you customise Hawke it will switch your voice to the default option. If you go with Default Hawke this doesn't happen.

Nothing kills your gaming experience more than your character who you've been playing for 20 hrs shouldn't having a change of voice. Really want to advance the story, but I can't until they patch it up. Amazed that this bug made it through to the release.
